Since the early seventeenth century when the secret of porcelain was first carried from China to Japan by Korean potters, Japan has produced some of the world’s most exquisite porcelains. A catalog raisonné of historical pieces of porcelain from China and Japan featuring photos and essays.\nWhen the famous Dutch art historian and connoisseur Frits Lugt (1884–1970) and his wife Jacoba Klever (1888–1969) decided to present their collections in the Hôtel Turgot in Paris, Chinese porcelain ranked among their priorities. They intended to give the French public an impression of Dutch Golden Age interiors, and a porcelain cabinet had traditionally been part of Dutch material culture. An enduring witness to Dutch-Japanese relations is Arita export porcelain made for the Dutch market in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Dutch East India Company (VOC) was instrumental in ordering and distributing a variety of export wares. Private trade also played an important role. This resulted in the importation of large amounts of Japanese porcelain into The Netherlands, particularly during a period when Chinese porcelain was not available. As the 19th-century French name implies, the decorations are predominantly painted\nin diff erent shades of bright green enamels, combined with blue, yellow, red, black and sometimes some gold. This type of porcelain was made in the period c. 1680-1725, during the reign of Emperor Kangxi\n(1662-1722), when production in the porcelain kilns in Jingdezhen was at its height. As a new, modern type of ware, famille verte enjoyed a widespread appeal and was produced for the domestic Chinese market as well as for export to Europe. Simply put, famille verte wares are extraordinarily fine and beautiful objects.
