Whether it is her sunny temperament, or her gift of laughter or her wide-ranging abilities, or all three, Judi Dench is a star. Shortlisted for a 1998 Hollywood Oscar for her performance as Queen Victoria in Mrs Brown, she is widely loved and not only among the theatrical profession. Judi Dench has always declined to write her memoirs, but agreed to co-operate with John Miller, whose life of Ralph Richardson was highly praised on publication in 1995. The only previous biography (by Gerald Jacobs and published in 1985) causes her to wrinkle her nose and laugh. "It didn't tell me anything I didn't know about myself. " John Miller's does that. The final chapter includes Dench's own diary she kept in the run-up to the Oscar ceremony in Hollywood in March 1998.

James II (1633–1701) lacked the charisma of his father, Charles I, but shared his tendency to dismiss the views of others when they differed from his own. Failing to understand his subjects, James was also misunderstood by them. In this highly-regarded biography, John Miller reassesses James II and his reign, drawing on a wide array of primary sources from France, Italy, and Ireland as well as England. Miller argues that the king had many laudable attributes--he was brave, loyal, honorable, and hard-working, and he was at least as benevolent toward his people as his father had been. Yet James’s conversion to Catholicism fueled the distrust of his Protestant subjects who placed the worst possible construction on his actions and statements. Although James came to see the securing of religious freedom for Catholics in the wider context of freedom for all religious minorities, his people naturally doubted the sincerity of his commitment to toleration. The book explores James’s relations with the state and society, focusing on the political, diplomatic, and religious issues that shaped his reign. Miller discusses the human failings, the gulf of understanding between the king and his subjects, and the sheer bad luck that led to James’s downfall. He also considers the reasons for James’s lack of interest in recovering his kingdom after his flight to France in 1688. The Apostle Luke makes mention of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the book of Acts which immediately produced results. Acts chapter two, verses fourteen to forty-one illustrates the results of one being empowered by the Holy Spirit. Immediately after being endowed with power from on High, Peter stood up, raised his voice, and declared unto the multitude the Word of the Lord. A direct consequence of this newly received power was that all who accepted the words from the “Divine Empowered” Peter were baptized and the Scriptures records that on that day alone there were added about three thousand souls to the Body of Christ. Could Peter have delivered such a compelling dialogue without Divine Empowerment? If he could, or if he did, would he have produced the same results? One could logically argue that he could not and if he did, the results would not be as grand. This book is a assemblage of six perspectives sociorhetorically analyzing the subject of Divine Empowerment as seen in Acts 2. We, the authors, each aspired to examine Luke’s understanding of the Old Testament concept of the Divine empowerment of leaders. We explored carefully and thoroughly an analysis method of interpretation referred to as the “fulfillment of prophecy.” Luke strategically used Old Testament prophecy (specifically found in Joel and Psalms) in validating Jesus’ Great Commission in preaching the Gospel to Gentiles and in the necessity of being endowed with power from on High. The chapters in this book were individually created for and as a scholarly assignment. We, the authors, have decided to preserve the manuscripts in their original format with the intentions of capturing the initial revelation on the necessity for Divine Empowerment and its transformational power upon leaders and followers. It is our prayer that the eyes of your understanding becomes and continues to be enlightened as you read and examine the Word of God.
