Populations in both eastern and western cultures have been mining, trading, and carving garnets for millennia. Named for its likeness to the flesh and seeds of the pomegranate (Latin granatus), garnet is most commonly thought of as a red gemstone, but it actually occurs in all colors of the spectrum. In fact, garnet is a complex group of fifteen separate mineral species, which are sometimes hard to differentiate visually and more often than not occur together in the same specimen. Six of these species almandine, andradite, grossular, pyrope, spessartine, and uvarovite are regularly featured in mineral cabinets and jewelry. Garnets are also valued for much more than their aesthetics: they are important rock-forming minerals enhancing our understanding of geologic events; they are commercially valuable as abrasives; they are part of an indicator mineral suite used by geologists to locate diamond deposits; and they are great crystallographic examples with their textbook-perfect dodecahedral shapes. Yet even with this abundance, truly fine garnet specimens and large gemstones are surprisingly difficult to find.

It was presented to the industry as a standalone book designed to be used by gemologists as a visual reference library of inclusion photomicrographs. It was also intended as a companion volume for use with gemological microscopes and as a guide to microscopic explorations. As such it is very successful. While the information and images in this first volume are still valid and useful, developments since that time made it seem prudent to extend that single volume into a continuous three volume photomicrographic reference library illustrating and addressing the Important changes developments and discoveries in the field of gemological microscopy. The microscopic exploration of gems and the discovery and interpretation of inclusions is of tremendous and ever increasing importance to the gem and jewellery industry. It is also the most interesting aspect of gemology to many gemologists. This present book,. volume 2 in the three-book Photoatlas library series, creates a link to the earlier work and photographically focuses on more recent observations and new discoveries of gemologically significant internal characteristics in many relatively well known traditional natural gems as well as the treatments, and synthetics of these gems that so drastically influence the marketplace.
