This is the first and only scholarly edition of Sir John Hawkins's Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D., a work that has not been widely available in complete form for more than two hundred years. Published in 1787, some four years before James Boswell's biography of Johnson, Hawkins's Life complements, clarifies, and often corrects numerous aspects of Boswell's Life. Samuel Johnson (1709-84) is the most significant English writer of the second half of the eighteenth century; indeed, this period is widely known as the Age of Johnson. Hawkins was Johnson's friend and legal adviser and the chief executor of his will. He knew Johnson longer and in many respects better than other biographers, including Boswell, who made unacknowledged use of Hawkins's Life and helped orchestrate the critical attacks that consigned the book to obscurity. Sir John Hawkins had special insight into Johnson's mental states at various points in his life, his early days in London, his association with the Gentleman's Magazine, and his political views and writings. Hawkins's use of historical and cultural details, an uncommon literary device at the time, produced one of the earliest "life and times" biographies in our language. The Introduction by O M Brack, Jr., covers the history of the composition, publication, and reception of the Life and provides a context in which it should be read. Annotations address historical, literary, and linguistic uncertainties, and a full textual apparatus documents how Brack arrived at this definitive text of Hawkins's Life.

Dr Samuel Johnson (1709-84) is regarded as one of the outstanding figures of English literature, as a poet, essayist, moralist, critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. This collected edition of his works - commissioned by the publisher within hours of Johnson's death, such was his celebrity - was published in 1787 in eleven volumes, edited by his literary executor, the musicologist Sir John Hawkins. Volume 10 contains a mixture of items - political tracts on taxation and current affairs; miscellaneous short works including book reviews and papers on agriculture, French prisoners of war, and the building of Blackfriars' Bridge; and A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland. These show the range of his interests and the ease with which he could turn his pen to any topic.

Excerpt from General History of the Science and Practice of Music, Vol. 4Against this opinion, which has nothing to support it but vulgar tradition, it may be urged that David Ricci was not a composer of any kind. The historians and others who speck of him represent him as a lutenist and singer; and Sir James Melvil, who was personally acquainted with him, vouchsafes him no higher a character than that of a merry fellow, and a good musician. 'Her majesty,' says he, 'had three valets of her chamber, who sung three parts, and wanted 'a bass to sing the fourth part. Therefore they told her majesty of 'this man, as one fit to make the fourth in concert. Thus was he 'French secretary retired himself to France, this David obtained the 'same office.'Melvil, in the course of his Memoirs, relates that Ricci engrossed the favour of the queen; that he was suspected to be a pensioner of pope; and that by the part he took in all public transactions, he gave rise to the troubles of Scotland, and precipitated the ruin of his mistress.Buchanan is somewhat more particular; the account he gives is that Ricci was born at Turin; that his father, an honest but poor man, got a mean livelihood by teaching young people the rudiments of music. That having no patrimony to leave them, he instructed his children of both sexes in music, and amongst the rest his son Divid, who being in the prime of his youth, and having a good voice, gave hopes of his succeeding in that profession. That with a view to advance his fortune, Ricci went to the court of the duke of Savoy, then at Nice; but meeting with no encouragement there, found means to get himself admitted into the train of the Count de Moretto, then upon the point of setting out on an embassy to Scotland.
