Puritan John Flavel s work entitled The Mystery of Providence was published in 1677. His book is here presented in an easier-to-read version, in the Great Christian Classics reprints series. John Flavel (1628-1691) was the son of a minister who died in prison for his Nonconformity. In 1656, having been educated at University College Oxford, Flavel was invited to become minister of a church in Dartmouth, Devon, where he spent the majority of his life. Though the Act of Uniformity of 1662 declared his public ministry illegal, he faithfully continued preaching the Word of God and writing, despite the pressure of persecution. Flavel was pre-eminent in his ability to combine writings for the heart as well as the mind.
