The Caliph Uthman's solution to the problem of divergent readings of the Qur'an emerging in the decades after Muhammed's death was radical: destroy all but his own authorized version.  When  a pre-Uthman copy  of the Qur'an is found when the Great Mosque of Sana'a,  Yemen, is undergoing renovations, the different  sects and powers of the Middle East try to exploit the varient readings which come to light.
