This is the only full-length novel of the American writer Jerome David Salinger who limits the happening time of the story to the three days from the 16-year-old middle school student Holden Caulfield leaving school to wandering in Manhattan. He learns the way of writing from the stream of consciousness, fully exploring a teenage boy's inner world. Anger and anxiety are two main themes of the book. The hero's experiences and ideas have caused a strong response among young people especially the college and high school students.

16-year-old middle school student Holden was born of a middle-class family in New York. Parents and teachers ask him to study hard so as to get ahead in the world in the future, but the school is talking about women, alcohol and sex all day long. He cannot bear the sight of anything around and is in no mood for study, so he is always punished. The fourth time he is dismissed from school, he doesnt go home and wanders on the streets in New York City alone for a day and two nights.
