In the mid 1980s the Office of Public Archaeology excavated a series of sites in Clear Creek Canyon in central Utah in advance of I-70 construction. A tip by a local resident resulted in the discovery and subsequent complete excavation of a massive Fremont Village, later labeled Five Finger Ridge. In addition, excavators sampled or fully excavated a series of shelters and other residential Fremont sites in the canyon. The abundance of new data and rich artifact yield led directly to the establishment of Fremont Indian State Park across the canyon. This book relates the history of this work and presents the findings of the research.

Aspen Shelter on the Old Woman Plateau in central Utah was a hub of deer hunting activity from 4,000 years ago until the end of the Fremont era, about AD 1200. Thousands of deer bones discarded at the site are evidence of these early hunters’ success. In addition to the faunal remains, excavators uncovered two small house basins with central hearths and reflector stones dating to the Late Archaic period. Projectile points and miscellaneous butchering tools are common, as are milling tools and plant macrophytes. The Aspen Shelter occupation complements Sudden Shelter, a few miles south, where use ceased by the Late Archaic.

Dr. Ray T. Matheny, Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at BYU, where he mentored undergraduate and graduate students, also established the first BYU field school of archaeology and was the initiator and director of numerous archaeological projects. An Archaeological Legacy contains a short biography of Dr. Matheny’s life and work as well as essays by his colleagues—many of whom are his former students—about a variety of geographical areas and topics, mostly within the scope of the major areas of Dr. Matheny’s work: the Colorado Plateau, American Southwest, and Mesoamerica. Essays cover such topics as ancient Puebloan roads in San Juan County, Utah; Fremont farming and residential mobility on the Colorado Plateau; the Preclassic occupation of Southwestern Campeche, Mexico; early Indian schools and federal paternalism in the Four Corners Region; the protection of archaeological sites on national forests in Arizona and New Mexico; and the Paleoindian occupation at Kib-Ridge Yampa, Colorado.

The northwestern corner of Arizona, known as the Arizona strip, is an area of geographic and political isolation. Archaeological work conducted in this area has been limited. Given these facts, it was with enthusiasm that the Office of Public Archaeology (OPA) at Brigham Young University (BYU) entered into a cooperative agreement with the Arizona Strip District of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to assess two sites on the Uinkaret Plateau--Antelope Cave and Rock Canyon Shelter--deemed significant by BLM personnel and to complete analyses of data recovered from Antelope Cave in the 1950s. Assessment of Antelope Cave and Rock Canyon Shelter consisted of tests conducted at each of these sites under the guidance of fundamental research questions related to chronology, subsistence, settlement, and paleoenvironments. The original intent of this project was to supplement the scanty knowledge of the prehistory of this area and to begin some limited regional and site specific research on the Uinkaret Plateau. As part of the BLM/BYU cooperative agreement, it was proposed that the BLM survey the area within a 10 km radius of Antelope Cave for the purpose of locating sites that would assist in establishing patterns in resource procurement amongst the regions ancient inhabitants.
