The weak point in the present treatment of these ores is the low extraction of the silver. At the current price of silver this is perhaps not of much moment with ores in which the chief value lies in the gold contents but in the case of low-grade silver ores carrying from 1 to 3 dwt. Of gold, and from 10 to 20 oz. Of silver, per ton, the subject is one of increasing concern to the mine owner. The difference between an extraction of 50 per cent. And 85 per cent. After washing the ppt. of nitrite of potassium and cobalt, obtained in (9), with sodium acetate, wash with acetic acid; dry; transfer to aweighed porcelain-dish, and cautiously ignite with an excess of sulphuric acid. This will convert the K and Co into sulphates. Great care must be taken to avoid decomposing the sulphates by too much heat. The decomposition is indicated by a blackening of the substance at the edges. The sulphates bear a low heat without breaking up. If blackening occurs, moisten with sulphuric acid, and again ignite more cautiously; cool, and weigh as--2CoSO4 + 3K2SO4 = 1417% of cobalt. THE ESTIMATION OF NICKEL IN GENTHITE. This is a silicate of nickel and magnesium which occurs plentifully in New Caledonia. Its valuation may be determined as follows: --(1.) Weigh out 1 gram of the finely-powdered ore. (2.) Digest in 10 c.c. strong HCl, containing a little HNO3, till the gangue is white. If necessary, repeat the operation with a fresh portion of HCl and HNO., . (3.) Evaporate to dryness. Add a little HCl: warm; add 50 c.c. of water, and stir. (4.) Filter; wash and add ammonia to the filtrate in slight excess. This will precipitate any iron and alumina present, leaving the nickel and magnesia in solution. (5.) Filter to get rid of the iron and alumina; wash and to the filtrate add a solution of freshly-made ammonium sulphide, which will pp. the nickel as the sulphide, NiS. (6.) Filter and wash the precipitated NiS with water containing a little H2S. (7.) Dry the filter-paper and contents, and incinerate in a porcelain-crucible. Burn the paper first, and then add the precipitate to the ash and complete the incineration. (8.) Dissolve the roasted residue in aqua regia; evaporate to dryness, and re-dissolve in water. (</p>
