PRÉFACE. Le plan de cet ouvrage s’est présenté à l’esprit de l’auteur il y a plusieurs années, quoique l’invention des détails soit d’une date récente. L’idée de rassembler des marins et des sauvages au milieu d’incidents qu’on peut supposer devoir faire connaître le caractère des grands lacs de l’Amérique, ayant été mentionnée à l’éditeur, celui-ci obtint de l’auteur une sorte de promesse d’exécuter ce projet quelque jour, ce qu’il fait aujourd’hui, quoique un peu tard et imparfaitement. Dans le principal personnage de cette légende, le lecteur pourra reconnaître un ancien ami dans de nouvelles circonstances. Si la manière dont se montre cette vieille connaissance sous un nouveau point de vue ne diminue pas la faveur qu’il a obtenue du public, ce sera un grand plaisir pour l’auteur, car il prend à l’individu en question presque autant d’intérêt que celui qu’inspirerait la réalité. Ce n’est pourtant pas une tache facile de présenter le même individu dans quatre ouvrages différents, et de soutenir le caractère particulier indispensable pour son identité, sans courir le risque de fatiguer le lecteur par une sorte d’uniformité. Cette épreuve a été différée si longtemps, autant par doute qu’elle pût réussir que par toute autre cause. Dans une telle entreprise, comme dans toutes les autres, «  c’est la fin  » qui doit «  couronner l’œuvre.  » Le caractère indien offre si peu de variété, que j’ai cherché à éviter de trop appuyer sur ce point dans la présente occasion, et je crains même qu’on ne trouve plus de nouveauté que d’intérêt dans la réunion de l’Indien et du marin. Le novice pourra regarder comme un anachronisme de placer des navires sur l’Ontario au milieu du {XVIIIe siècle  ; mais à cet égard, les faits justifieront ce qu’on pourrait croire la licence d’une fiction. Quoique les bâtiments mentionnés dans cet ouvrage puissent n’avoir jamais existé sur ce lac ni ailleurs, on sait que d’autres navires ont vogué sur cette mer intérieure à une époque plus éloignée que celle qui vient d’être indiquée, et ils leur ressemblaient assez pour former une autorité suffisante pour les introduire dans un ouvrage de fiction. C’est un fait dont on ne se souvient pas généralement, quoiqu’il soit bien connu, qu’il se trouve, le long des grands lacs, des endroits isolés qui remontent, comme établissements, aussi loin que la plupart des anciennes villes d’Amérique, et qui étaient le siège d’une espèce de civilisation long-temps avant que la plus grande partie même des États les plus anciens fussent tirés du désert.

The Last of the Mohicans is a historical novel by James Fenimore Cooper. It is the second book of the Leatherstocking Tales pentalogy and the best known to contemporary audiences. The Pathfinder, published 14 years later in 1840, is its sequel. The Last of the Mohicans is set in 1757, during the French and Indian War (the Seven Years' War), when France and Great Britain battled for control of North America. During this war, both the French and the British used Native American allies, but the French were particularly dependent, as they were outnumbered in the Northeast frontier areas by the more numerous British colonists. The novel is primarily set in the upper New York wilderness, detailing the transport of the two daughters of Colonel Munro, Alice and Cora, to a safe destination at Fort William Henry. Among the caravan guarding the women are the frontiersman Natty Bumppo, Major Duncan Heyward, and the Indians Chingachgook and Uncas, the former of whom is the novel's title character. These characters are sometimes seen as a microcosm of the budding American society, particularly with regards to their racial composition. The novel has been one of the most popular English-language novels since its publication and is frequently assigned reading in American literature courses. It has been adapted numerous times and in different languages for films, TV movies and cartoons.
