Friends Without A Border

The Friends Without A Border, founded by Kenro Izu in 1995, is a non-profit organization with the sole objective of saving the lives of Asian children. As stated in the book, "An estimated eight million land mines have been planted in Cambodia since the 1940s. Forty thousand civilians [many of them children] have been injured or killed...Also, due to insufficient medical facilities, there are victims of pediatric diseases which are obsolete in Japan and most Western countries. Friends Without A Border is building the Angkor Clinic for Children to provide much needed free aid to these injured and sick children." Izu raises money for the Angkor clinic through the sale of his photographs of the ancient Angkor monument, "which has profoundly touched his heart."

Of all the sacred sites that Kenro Izu has photographed since 1979, Angkor Wat is undoubtedly his spiritual and psychological base camp. While he has so often succeeded in representing the sacred and ancient landscape, Angkor Wat is the creative thread that weaves itself through all of his work. Angkor Wat is the touchstone - it supports Izu's output and indeed holds it together like the geometrical matrix of the spider's web.For these reasons, Passage to Angkor artfully reexamines this most important aspect of Izu's career spanning the last quarter century, presenting Izu's most accomplished Angkor Wat photographs in a rarefied book form that is remarkable for its physical beauty.Passage to Angkor is accomplished by poems by Helen Ibbitson Jessup that were inspired by Izu's photographs. Proceeds will be donated to Friends without a Border, a charity founded in 1995 by Kenro Izu as a way of returning something to Cambodia for the many images he captured there.

Born in Osaka, Japan in 1949, Kenro Izu moved to New York City in the early 1970s, where he quickly established himself as a master of still life photography. A chance viewing of the mammoth plate photographs by the Victorian photographer Francis Frith led Izu to travel to Egypt in 1979, to photograph the pyramids and other sacred monuments. Thus began the artist s renowned series 'Sacred Places,' which includes work from holy sites in Syria, Jordan, England, Scotland, Mexico, Easter Island and, more recently, Buddhist and Hindu sites in India, Cambodia, Burma, Vietnam, Indonesia, and China. Using a custom-made, 300-pound camera, Izu creates negatives that are 14 inches high by 20 inches wide. The resulting platinum palladium prints are widely recognized as being among the most beautiful prints in the history of the medium. To celebrate the thirtieth year of the ongoing 'Sacred Places' series, we are proud to present Kenro Izu's Thirty Year Retrospective, a stunning collection of the artist s most powerful work to date. This gorgeous new monograph comprises some 100 plates, beautifully printed in duotone on matt art paper and bound in Japanese cloth.
