In response to the sense of crisis in many of today s towns the proponents of new traditionalism offer a form of urban planning which looks back to more traditional styles whilst firmly integrating the requirements of modern life. Their designs are easily accessible and characterized by a sense of public spirit, identification and order.  The contributions in this book reveal how these principles relate to the specific European city in the 20th century as well as to the writings of theoreticians from Camillo Sitte up to Rem Koolhaas. The authors reveal why the provocatively conservative approach has enjoyed so much success in the avant-garde Netherlands. They draw comparisons with the New Urbanism found in the USA and above all develop a systematic approach to town planning.  New towns, the rebuilding of town areas, the restructuring of city centres and the extension of towns and urban areas are investigated in the chapters on urban composition. All examples in this part are from the Krier Kohl office and demonstrate in details the design process up to the realized buildings in particular the architectural realization by a wide range of architects, including Michael Graves, Cesar Pelli and others, shows that new traditionalism in urban planning can fruitfully work together with a wide range of architectural approaches.

The work of the Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza tells the story of architecture from Modernity through to the twenty-first century. This monograph gives a comprehensive overview of the designs and built work of Arne van Herk and Sabien de Kleijn, from 1973 until the present day. Besides architecture, urban design, interiors and furniture, the book dwells at length on the informal and conceptual projects--films, clothing, everyday objects--developed by van Herk &amp; de Kleijn throughout their career. Their joint oeuvre is explored in a continuous narrative that makes no distinction between the ingenious rooflights of their own houseboat and a major housing project like Haarlemmerhouttuinen in Amsterdam, and focuses just as easily on their ultra-light half-meter-high platform shoes as on one of their interiors. If the significance of their work lies in their liberal concern for everyday things, this volume emphasizes their approach as one that eschews image in favor of imagination, of giving shape to the things with which we surround ourselves. These are the seven organizational principles essential to the design philosophy and methodology of Dutch architecture firm, Van Sambeek &amp; Van Veen. Naturally, these are the themes by which this comprehensive volume of their projects--the only monograph of their work to date--is organized. For each of their designs, architects Erna van Sambeek and Rene van Veen ask how the essence of the task can be reduced to a combination of two or more of these themes. Each project therefore appears at least twice in the book, but with images and text specifically tailored to address the dominant theme of the particular chapter. Again and again when looking through the firm's more than 18 years of projects; some unbuilt, we are reminded of their design philosophy: to seek the richness that architecture can gain from a consistent concentration on the essentials, and a clear separation of primary and secondary aspects.

Living in the Lowlands offers a kaleidoscopic overview of one of the most important themes in Dutch architectural history: living and the home environment. Fifteen domestic scenes illustrate important points in the history of housing construction in the Netherlands since 1850; all are representative of prevailing Dutch design philosophies and the internationally respected Dutch public housing tradition and living culture. Specific periods are addressed on the basis of selected projects: Amsterdam's Vondelstraat by P.J.H. Cuijpers, Plan Zuid by Berlage, Amsterdam's Betondorp (Concrete Village), the Kiefhoek by J.J.P. Oud, Rotterdam's Pendrecht and Alexanderpolder neighborhoods, Almere, Amsterdam's Nieuwmarkt neighborhood, and Ypenburg. Utopian designs by the architects H.T. Wijdeveld, Cornelis van Eesteren and OMA are also included.
