A transgenic organism is a plant, animal, bacterium, or other living organism that has had a foreign gene added to it by means of genetic engineering. Carl Hall, born in 1921 in Detroit, was an accomplished Magic Realist painter on the brink of a major career in American art when World War II intervened. As a young Army recruit, he was assigned to Camp Adair near Corvallis, Oregon, in 1942. For Hall, Oregon was "Eden Again," and after military service in the Pacific he and his wife settled permanently in the state, which became the focus of Hall's consummate artistry for the next 50 years. Hall became one of western Oregon's most expressive visual interpreters, focusing for most of his lifetime on the terrain of the Willamette Valley, the mountains that enclose it, and the Pacific coast beyond. In exploring Hall's place in Pacific Northwest and American art, this book is a study of regional art and art history, of the interplay between regional and national art production in the periods before and after World War II, and of Hall's metaphorical use of natural forms as the basis for personal expression.

Intersections: The Life and Art of Jan Zach

Born in Czechoslovakia, Jan Zach (1914-1986) trained as an artist in Prague, traveled to New York in 1938 to help prepare the Czech pavilion for the New York World's Fair, and never returned home because of the Nazi invasion and later Communist takeover. He settled permanently in Eugene in 1958 when he became a professor of sculpture at the University of Oregon. In his intersection with Oregon, Zach brought an international perspective on culture, art, and politics that was unusual among artists of the Pacific Northwest. His importance is based partly on his grafting of European modernism with Northwest regionalism - an intersection that resulted in a wide variety of sculpture, from rough hewn beach logs to stainless steel kinetic constructions. The diversity of his production is unified by the elements that most fascinated him: light, movement, and time, and by his relentless call for human freedom and resistance to oppression. This book explores Zach's place in European and New World art of the mid-twentieth century, interweaving an account of Zach's colorful life with an assessment of his artwork - from his early paintings and commercial illustrations to his mature work as a major Northwest sculptor. Roger Hull is professor of art history at Willamette University, in Salem, Oregon.

Charles E. Heaney (1897-1981) was a highly regarded Oregon painter and printmaker who created a powerful body of work over a sixty-year period that is remarkable for its consistency, enormity, and complex emotional expressiveness. This volume examines his paintings, including his urban "demolition" series based on the razing of old buildings in Portland as the city modernized, his renderings of the remote landscape of eastern Oregon and Nevada, and his "portraits" of individuals, usually women, placed icon-like in the center of the picture. As a printmaker, he was recognized thorughout his lifetime for his woodcut prints of Portland neighborhoods, small Oregon towns, and the high desert of Eastern Oregon, and his aquatints based on plants, fish, and fossil forms.
