In the literary circles of Northern Song Dynasty, Huang Tingjian's poetry had a style of his own. Huang liked using allusions, common sayings and rare words to write poems, which are valued by people all long. Qin Guan was a famous ci-poet of the ""graceful and restrained school"" in late Northern Song Dynasty, and his ci-poems mostly describe love between men and women and express the complaint about frustration in career; the language is refined, melody is harmonious and graceful, teemed with sentiment and rhyme, highly reputed through the ages; well, the emotions expressed are mild and indirect, and the language is relatively gloomy. In Etymology, Zhang Yan commented on Huang's ci-poems: ""Quietly elegant in form, containing vigor and immanent power inside, having lingering meaning, and leading a person to endless aftertastes.""
