Odon von Horvath (1901-1939) is one of the most important theater writers in the 1930s. His reputation rests largely on the four plays in this collection, which he called Volksstucke (popular plays), although he had no desire to embrace this tradition uncritically. Reflected in these plays is the sympathy for the situation of the exploited classes, as well as the concern for the way language is used for deception and self-deception. The hollow characters come across as potentially receptive to fascism. A latent brutality is unmasked, a lack of genuine feeling -- all lying hidden under a veneer of facile sentimentality.

Mit seinem Volksstück ,,Geschichten aus dem Wiener Wald&#8205;", das 1931 in Berlin uraufgeführt wurde, hatte Horváth nicht nur unmittelbaren Erfolg, sondern sicherte sich den Nachruhm, stellt es doch bis heute eines der meistinszenierten Stücke auf deutschsprachigen Bühnen dar. Der Band lässt die komplexe Entstehungsgeschichte von ,,Geschichten aus dem Wiener Wald" nachvollziehen. Diese reicht bis ins Jahr 1930 zurück und wurde in zwei Vorarbeiten und fünf Konzeptionen gegliedert. Der Band bietet einen Großteil des umfassenden genetischen Materials zu dem Stück und zeigt dabei auch die vielfältigen Überarbeitungsprozesse und die für Horváth so typischen Schnitt- und Klebeverfahren anhand eines genauen genetischen Kommentars und der speziell dafür entwickelten Simulationsgrafiken auf. Die beiden Endfassungen des Stückes, jene in sieben Bildern und jene in drei Teilen, werden in linearisierter und emendierter Form dargeboten. Eine Übersichtsgrafik lässt die Transformationen und Permutationen zwischen den beiden Endfassungen genauestens nachvollziehen.
