Toujours occupé à donner sa version des choses, l'auteur en partance fait preuve d'un sens aigu de l'observation. Il ccmpose son livre à partir de lettres, de souvenirs, du passage du temps et de son effet sur les gens. Tu parles, que je me rappelais, j'ai beau avoir la mémoire neuve, Tout ce qui n'est pas écrit disparaît , c'est le titre d'un formidable recueil d'entretiens de James Salter, et je savais de quoi nous allions causer : de rien. Geneviève Bassano, la correspondante, lectrice assidue des romans de Holder, survient dans la vie de l'auteur en avril 1996. Sa première lettre éveille la curiosité du narrateur et provoque une entrevue. Geneviève l'invite à séjourner dans sa demeure, lieu qui deviendra de façon passagère "la pièce où vivre.
