Chester County was formed in 1785 as a county of Camden District. Prior to the border surveys of 1764 and 1772, the area was included in the North Carolina counties of Anson, Mecklenburg, and Tryon. For this reason many grants and deeds from North Carolina are referenced in the Chester County deeds. Chester County bordered on the counties of York, Fairfield, Union, Kershaw, and Lancaster. 
The deeds in this volume were recorded 1785-1799. As is common, there are deeds recorded from a much earlier time period. The earliest deed included in this work dates from 17 November 1768. With the beginning of county courts in South Carolina, deeds were required to be either acknowledged or proved by the oaths of two witnesses until 1788. Deeds which had been proved prior to 1785 before a Justice of the Peace were frequently accepted on that proof and recorded. Beginning in 1788 only one witness was required to prove a deed before recording. The deeds in this volume have been abstracted from South Carolina Archives microfilm, Rolls C2268, C2269, and C2270.

Winton (Barnwell) County, South Carolina Minutes of County Court and Will Book 1, 1785-1791

Lewisburg, Orange, Lexington, and Winton Counties were formed in Orangeburg District, South Carolina, in 1785. Winton County was renamed Barnwell County in 1868. Winton County "is the only county of Orangeburg District which has eighteenth century records extant. We have Winton County Court Minutes, 1786-1791, and deeds for the same period, with the wills beginning in 1787, when the circuit court districts ceased that function. . .This volume contains a transcription of the court minute book, which includes a tax list for the year 1787, and abstracts of the instruments in Will Book 1. The original loose wills and estate papers for the period 1787-1791 have not survived. They probably perished with the Orangeburg District records in 1865." Newspapers of Columbia, South Carolina, offered state-wide coverage of marriage and death notices - a treasure trove of genealogical data. Because Columbia was virtually destroyed by fire in 1865, complete files of ante-bellum Columbia newspapers do not exist; however, a remarkable number of newspapers have been preserved. The author transcribed or abstracted notices from the holdings of the South Caroliniana Library, Duke University Library, and the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. Since South Carolina did not require marriage licenses prior to 1 July 1911, the marriage notices included in this volume are of prime importance. In addition to names and dates, marriage notices typically include the place of residence of the bride and groom. Death notices frequently give biographical data such as names of parents, date of birth, occupation, business, religious affiliation and/or military service. In the case of duplication of notices, the author has provided the notice which offered the most information. A full-name index adds to the value of this work.

Marriage and Death Notices from Columbia, South Carolina, Newspapers, 1838-1860, including legal notices from burnt counties

This work is not a genealogy of a wealthy low-country plantation family, nor that of an up-country gentleman farmer, but a genealogy of the descendants of a poor German protestant who settled in the midlands of South Carolina. Variations of the name in America include: Bidenbach, Peterbox, Peterbaugh, Bedenbaugh, Betenbaugh, etc. The author’s goal in this volume is to provide information whereby any Bedenbaugh descendant can find his or her own lineage with a minimum of research of the direct lineage. With a little research into death certificates and census reports, any descendants of Adam Bedenbaugh or John Uriah Beatenbaugh should be able to trace his or her lineage using the information in this volume.This volume is organized in the New England Register Method (with some modifications). The lineage in Germany to the immigrant is presented in this format, but the individuals are not numbered, except the direct lineage and that by upper case letters. The American lineage is organized by generations in each section, each person being assigned a number. (The immigrant Johann Michael Bedenbaugh, is number 1.) Where there is information on an individual or his/her descendants further in the volume, the number is preceded by a plus sign (+). Newberry County was formed in 1785 and became Newberry District in 1800. Prior to the border surveys of 1764 and 1772, the area was included in Anson, Mecklenburg, and Tryon Counties, North Carolina. For this reason, a few grants and deeds from North Carolina are referenced in the Newberry County deeds. Early settlers of Newberry County, as indicated in these deeds, included Quakers, German Protestant immigrants, Germans from Pennsylvania, and Irish Protestant immigrants. There were also settlers from North Carolina. Migration from Newberry County to other areas of South Carolina is also indicated in the deeds.
The deeds in this volume were recorded for 1785 to 1794; however, the earliest deed included in this work dates from July 1751. Union County was formed in 1785; in 1800 it became Union District. In the colonial period, the area of Union County was considered part of Craven County or Berkeley County, South Carolina. Prior to the border surveys of 1764 and 1772, the area was included in the North Carolina counties of Anson, Mecklenburg, and Tryon. For this reason, many grants and deeds from North Carolina are referenced in the Union County deeds. Union County bordered on the counties of Spartanburg, Laurens, Newberry, Fairfield, York, and Chester. Little changes in its boundaries occurred until 1897 when a portion of Union County was taken, with portions of Spartanburg and York Counties, to form Cherokee County. The deeds in this volume were recorded between 1800 and 1811. As is common, there are deeds recorded from a much earlier time period. The earliest deed included in this work dates from 4 July 1769. The deeds in this volume have been abstracted from South Carolina Archives microfilm, Rolls C2206 and C2207. Union County, South Carolina Deed Abstracts, Volume II: Deed Books G-K (1800-1811 [1769-1811])

Anson County was formed in 1748 or 1749 and, while it was later reduced in size, the records in this volume include the period when the county was at its largest. As the title indicates, this work contains abstracts of deeds (1749-1766) and of wills and estates (1749-1795). The deed books, with one exception, are abstracted in their entirety, as are the probate records. Since no Anson County court minutes exist except for 1771 to 1777, the returns provided here contain information on some wills and estates no longer extant. Also included is the 1763 tax list which, although incomplete, is the earliest surviving tax list for the county. Originally published in three separate volumes, the work is now consolidated, repaged, and provided with a new index and table of contents.

The work is arranged throughout in alphabetical order by the surname of the groom, and brides and others mentioned in the records are conveniently located in the index. Each entry gives the names of the bride and groom, the date of the marriage, and the source of the record.
