This study examines the development of the Syrian state as it has emerged under thirty-five years of military-Ba'thist rule and, particularly, under President Hafiz al-Asad. It analyzes the way in which the fragility of the post-independence state, unable to contain rising nationalist struggle and class conflict, opened the way to the Ba'th party's rise to power and examines how the Ba'th's 'revolution from above' transformed Syria's socio-political terrain.

This book provides a comprehensive analysis of Middle East international politics in the light of international relations theory. It assesses the impact of international penetration, including the historic formation of the regional state system, the continued role of external great powers, and the incorporation of the region into the international capitalist market. It examines the region’s distinctive dialect between trans-state identities, Arabism and Islam, and the consolidation of a sovereign state system. It looks at the consequences of state formation for the ability of state elites to manage the external and domestic arenas in which they must operate; and it analyzes the impact of the foreign policy process in individual states.

The University of St Andrews Centre for Syrian Studies was founded in November 2006. The mission of the Centre is to foster scholarship and dialogue about contemporary Syriaùparticularly in the areas of economic and political reform and security and foreign policy issuesùas well as exchanges between Syrian and other scholars. Centre fellows do research in St Andrews and Syria and their findings are disseminated through a website, periodic conferences, and a publishing program. The director of the Centre is Professor Raymond Hinnebusch, and the Centre is funded by the Asfari Foundation with offices in London and Aberdeen.
