The church fathers displayed considerable interest in the early chapters of Genesis, and often wrote detailed commentaries or preached series of homilies on the Hexameron--the Six Days of Creation--among them Eustathius of Antioch, Basil the Great, Gregory of Nyssa, Theodore of Mopsuestia, Ambrose, John Chrysostom and Augustine. This volume of Ancient Christian Texts offers a first-time English translation of Severian of Gabala's In cosmogoniam and a fresh translation of a portion of Bede the Venerable's Libri quatuor in principium Genesis. Severian, bishop of Gabala in Syria, who early on was a friend of John Chrysostom, later turned against him and opposed him at the Synod of Oak in 403. Though displaying his own strengths, weaknesses and idiosyncrasies, Severian still represents the so-called Antiochene school with its preference for literal over allegorical interpretation of texts. The text derives from the six homilies found in Migne?s Patrologia graeca, volume 56, together with a seventh homily found only in the 1613 Eton edition of John Chrysostom?s works, edited by Henry Savile, and falsely attributed to Chrysostom. These homilies have been ably translated with explanatory notes by Robert C. Hill. The commentary from Bede the Venerable derives from Book I of his four-book commentary on Genesis from the account of creation to the casting out of Ishmael. Bede was a polymath--teacher, computist, exegete, historian--and one of the foremost scholars from Anglo-Saxon England. As a teacher, Bede strove to hand on the tradition of the church in a form easily understood by those who might not be well educated. These early chapters in Genesis provided teaching on creation, human origins, sin and redemption. The text deriving from Corpus Christianorum Latina is ably translated with explanatory notes by Carmen Hardin.

Two volumes of Chrysostom's commentaries on the Psalms. Volume One contains commentaries on Psalms 4-13, 44-50, and Volume Two contains commentaries on Psalms 109-150 (with the exception of the long Ps 119). While St. John Chrysostom may have commented on all 150 psalms in the Psalter, commentary has survived on only fifty-eight. In these volumes, Robert Charles Hill has prepared an excellent translation of the commentary - in Volume One Psalms 4-13, 44-50, and in Volume Two Psalms 109-150 (with the exception of the long Ps 119) - all appearing for the first time in English. In this work, probably composed while he was still in Antioch, Chrysostom's brilliance as an exegete of the "literal school" of Antioch shines forth, even as he works with the metaphorical language and imagery of the psalms. As Hill writes, "it is fascinating to watch Chrysostom . . . coming to grips with this lyrical material, achieving some sense of comfort, and eventually devising - for the first time? - his own hermeneutical principles for coping with such texts." The extensive Introduction in Volume One covers basic issues on the commentary, including its origins, its relationship to Chrysostom's other exegetical work, his attitude to Scripture, and the theology, spirituality and other moral accents of the commentary. Comment on Chrysostom's text is also given in endnotes, and indexes are provided in each volume.

Two volumes of Thoeodoret of Cyrus's commentaries on the Letters of St. Paul. Volume 1 contains the commentaries on Romans, 1-2 Corinthians. Volume 2 contains the commentaries on Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1-2 Thessalonians, Hebrews, 1-2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon. "While it was perhaps the work of his predecessors, especially John Chrysostom, that discouraged Theodoret of Cyrus from commenting on the Gospels, he was not deterred by "the world's luminaries," as he styles his predecessors in Antioch, from writing a Commentary on the Letters of Paul. He was content, as he says, "like some kind of mosquito, to buzz about the apostolic meadows along with those famous bees." Yet his Commentary is not only characterized by his distinctive gifts of moderation and conciseness, but also betrays the theological currents and controversies of those years leading up to the council of Chalcedon in 451. Revealing a fine affinity with Paul's thought, Theodoret succeeds in his aim of "demonstrating the profundity of the apostle's wisdom and stripping away the veils of the writing." Now that the work appears in English, it would be to the benefit of modern commentators to sample Theodoret's approach to Paul, even if the theological positions of the Antiochene school lead the bishop to wrestle with some of his subject's cherished convictions.
