This catalogue, which accompanies a collaborative exhibition between the Dresden State Museums and the J. Paul Getty Museum that brings together Bolognese Baroque paintings from both Dresden and Southern California public and private collections, provides an engaging survey of one of the most important and influential schools of Italian painting from 1575 to 1725. The exhibition will be on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum from December 16, 2008, through May 3, 2009. The book's essays strive to make these paintings--the majority of them deeply religious and as a whole extremely innovative in their time--understandable to and appreciated by a modern audience. Charles Dempsey's introduction gives an overview of the history of Bolognese painting, while Andreas Henning and Scott Schaefer lay out the history of the collecting of Bolognese paintings in Dresden and Southern California. Additional essays on Carracci, portraiture, cabinet pictures, naturalism, classicism, and the concluding eighteenth-century developments under Giuseppe Maria Crespi further illuminate these incredible works.

Jean de Jullienne (1686–1766) was one of the leading French amateurs and collectors of the eighteenth century. He played an important role as editor and dealer, most famously of Watteau’s œuvre, and held an influential position in the French art administration of his time, as director of the Gobelins factory until 1729. Jullienne’s collection epitomizes the most advanced taste of Parisian private collectors of the period. His strong interest in contemporary French art, Netherlandish painting, in sketches, pastels and drawings were all typical or even trendsetting for a new generation of rich Parisian collectors with only loose ties to the French court. The two sales of his collection were major events for the European art market. The watercolor views of his collection in the inventory from 1756, a unique document for the period, are here published in their entirety for the first time. This exhibition catalog will present masterworks from Jullienne’s collection, including Rubens, Rembrandt, Watteau, Wouwermans, Netscher, Bourdon, Vanloo, Greuze and Vernet. These are drawn from the Wallace Collection as well as museums in London, Edinburgh, Valenciennes, Berlin and from several important British private collections.

Frank Gerritz, born in 1964 in Hamburg, is an artist whose ideas literally move in space. Starting from the floor, his work spills onto the wall and, from there, has an effect back into the room. The sculptor works, among other things, on aluminum panels with paintsticks in such dense layers that the surfaces on the one hand appear sealed, yet the structure of the application on the other hand remains visible. Black is not always black; where the silver-anodized aluminum sur­faces reflect the room, the darker parts of the ­surfaces reveal a shimmering, a residue of light that changes depending on the viewpoint and light conditions. The drawn surfaces--graphite pencil or paintstick on MDF boards or aluminum--develop a materiality characterized by blurred reflections, thus transferring the surfaces of the two-dimen­sional image carriers into a spatial dimension. In addition, Gerritz casts iron blocks based on his own body dimensions; their stand area form the basis for his first prints on paper and define the proportions of his sculptural works in front of the wall. The catalog shows the inherent spatiality of the wall objects and sculptural groups and unfolds specific details.
