People usually leery of diets because they don't want to give up their weekly cheeseburger will be awed by recipes such as the egg- and cream-augmented Left Bank Burgers. Likewise, the Herbed Cheese Dip with cheddar, cream cheese, and sour cream is a startlingly deluxe accompaniment for the normally ascetic plate of raw veggies; the Crustless Spinach Pie entices with its rich mix of feta, Parmesan, eggs, herbs, and olive oil. The Hellers' approach to cooking is by no means highbrow and their recipes are often simply no-starch variations on standard fare (Steak in a Blanket replaces the dough with romaine lettuce, for example). An unspecified teriyaki sauce is a staple in their kitchen, and experienced cooks may wonder if they really mean tamari or soy sauce. People who have health restrictions on salt and alcohol (a few recipes call for wine) will want to have the original Carbohydrate Addict's Diet book handy in order to look up suitable alternatives--they are not included with this cookbook. Thomas Mann's last great novel, first published in German in 1947. Translated into English by H.T. Lowe-Porter, and published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1948. The novel is a re-shaping of the Faust legend set in the context of the first half of the 20th century and the turmoil of Germany in that period. The story centers on the life and work of the (fictitious) composer Adrian Leverkühn. The narrator is Leverkühn's childhood friend Serenus Zeitblom, who writes in Germany between 1943 and 1946. Leverkühn's extraordinary intellect and creativity as a young man mark him as destined for success, but his ambition is for true greatness. He strikes a Faustian bargain for creative genius: he intentionally contracts syphilis, which deepens his artistic inspiration through madness. He is subsequently visited by a Mephistophelean being (who says, in effect, "that you can only see me because you are mad, does not mean that I do not really exist"[1]), and, renouncing love, bargains his soul in exchange for twenty-four years of genius. His madness – his daemonic inspiration – leads to extraordinary musical creativity (which parallels the actual innovations of Arnold Schoenberg). Leverkühn's last creative years are increasingly haunted by his obsession with the Apocalypse and the Last Judgment. He feels the inexorable progress of his neuro-syphilitic madness leading towards complete breakdown. His madness reduces him to an infantile state in which he lives under the care of his relatives for another ten years. Leverkühn's life unfolds in the context of, and in parallel with, the German cultural and political environment which led to the rise and downfall of Nazi Germany. But the predisposing conditions for Leverkühn's pact with the devil are set in character, and in the artistic life, the artistic processes themselves, not merely as political allegory…

Although leadership is obviously a topic with global significance, this special issue has a distinctive European flavor. This is partly due to the fact that the contributors and editors hall from five European countries, but even the two chapters that describe major cross-national research covering up to 60 countries, concentrate attention on European issues including eastern countries that only moved into the center of Europe six or seven years ago.The justification for inclusion in this special issue is that each report makes a potentially practical contribution to work and organizational psychologists and those working in organizations in the area of Human Resource Management or Consultancy.European psychology has not yet given leadership anything like the attention it deserves and consequently the contrast with the United States, where this subject is extensively researched, is very noticeable. This special edition may lead to a reassessment of the opportunities and perhaps also act as a stimulus for more applied research to be carded out to engage with the prevalent conditions in Europe. The growth of the European Union and its various harmonization provisions seeks to establish what is often called a 'level playing field' for organizations and this will give leaders in competing enterprises new challenges and new opportunities. Several contributions in the present special issue begin to relate to these developing areas.

Léo Heller, former United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights to water and sanitation, draws on his own research in nine countries and reviews the theoretical, legal, and political issues involved. The first part presents the origins of the HRtWS, their legal and normative meanings and the debates surrounding them.
