Lois Weinberger travaille dans un réseau poético-politique qui attire notre attention sur les zones de marginalité et qui pose la question de la hiérarchie à tous les niveaux. Il a contribué de façon significative aux débats récents portant sur l'art et la nature. 
Weinberger, qui se définit lui-même comme un travailleur de terrain, s'est engagé depuis le milieu des années 1970 dans des travaux ethno-poétiques qui sont à la base de ses recherches artistiques actuelles autour des espaces naturels et de ceux construits par l'homme. En 1991 il a dessiné le WILD CUBE (Cube sauvage), une clôture en barres d'acier torsadé abritant une végétation spontanée se développant sans l'intervention de l'homme - une SOCIETE RUDERALE qui crée un espace à part au sein de l'environnement urbain. En même temps, Weinberger commence une série de transfert subversif de plantes sur des parcelles urbaines et rurales appropriées à son propos. Dans BURNING and WALKING (Brûler et marcher), il a cassé le bitume dans la cour du Szene Salzburg pendant le festival d'été de 1993, puis a laissé cet espace clos de 8 x 8 m se développer seul. Cette œuvre a été réinstallée en 1997 sur le parking de la Kulturbanhof pendant la Documenta X, puis à Tokyo en 1998. À la Documenta X, Weinberger a aussi planté des néophytes d'Europe de sud et du sud-est sur 100 m de longueur de rails, qui devint une métaphore des processus de migrations d'aujourd'hui, reconnue internationalement.
