Hero or Villain? John Wesley Hardin, aka “Young Seven Up”, “Little Arkansas”, “Wes Clemmons” and “J. H. Swain”, was a notorious outlaw and gunfighter who killed his first man at age 15 in 1868 and, according to himself, went on to kill over 40 more by the time he was sent to prison at age 25. He served 16 years of a 25 year sentence before being pardoned. While in prison he studied law and after his release managed to pass the Bar exam and took up the occupation of attorney. During the Reconstruction Era in Texas, just after the Civil War, many folks considered him a hero for standing up to the Federal Army of occupation and the State Police, many of whom were former slaves. His first victim was a black man and he went on to kill many more. Others say he was a cold-blooded murderer who killed more for personal reasons and minor disagreements than any other cause. He supposedly shot and killed a man for simply snoring too loud. He always had a reason to justify his killing. He once said, “I never killed a man who didn’t need killin!’” This book contains the story of his life and escapades in his own words. Read it and judge for yourself. Originally published in 1896. I reached for it, and as I was pulling it out to give it to him one of his men outside shot me on the right knee. I first thought, on the impulse of the moment, that I would kill the sheriff, but it flashed across me at once that it was a mistake and that in him was my only protection. The sheriff and posse were all very sorry that this happened and each seemed to vie with each other in making me as comfortable as possible. They got a hack and put pillows and bed quilts in it trying to make my journey easy. When we got to Eusk they put me in a private house and sent for a doctor. They then took me to the hotel, kept by Dick Eeagan on the corner of the square. Thus I arrived at Eusk about the 7th of September, 1872, with four bullet holes in me. Many different and varied kinds of people came to see me, some of them expecting to see a man with horns on his head and were surprised when they saw me, saying, "He looks just like we'uns." They would ask me all kinds of questions; how many men I had killed; if I had ever killed a woman, etc. Dr. Jirnson soon got there and cleared out the room. They would come there day after day, however; some for curiosity and some for charity. I did my best to be polite to all callers. Sheriff Eeagan sent his son Dood to nurse me and he and I soon became chums. Mrs. Eeagan was also very kind to me and seemed to never tire of fixing me dainty dishes to tempt a sick man's appetite. The Life of John Wesley Hardin, As Written by Himself is an autobiography by the famous outlaw. After the early 19th century saw the glorification of frontier folk heroes like Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone, a new breed of folk icons inhabited the Wild West, and one of the most notorious and controversial of them all is John Wesley Hardin, still regarded today as Texas’ most deadly gunfighter and most famous outlaw. Outlaws like Jesse James and Billy the Kid robbed and fought their way into dime novels, but Hardin managed to write his own way in, all while his encounters with the law in the South during Reconstruction made him a hero of sorts among Southerners. Hardin managed a stint in prison, claimed to have killed dozens of men, had an encounter with Wild Bill Hickok, and was even alleged to have killed a man because he was snoring. Despite all that activity, Hardin also managed to write an autobiography of his life, a unique feat among most outlaws of the era, who were too busy merely trying to avoid justice and/or death. Of course, Hardin’s claims in the autobiography have also been subjected to much scrutiny by historians, even as his reputation and legacy were hardened by his life and notorious death. While he had several documented and well-known brushes with the law and other famous Westerners, historians still attempt to sort out the facts from the legends.
