Born in Berlin in 1920, Helmut Newton trained as a teenager with legendary photographer Yva, following her lead into the enticing pastures of fashion, portraiture and nudes. Forced to flee the Nazis aged only 18, Newton never left Berlin behind. After his career exploded in Paris in the 1960s, he returned regularly to shoot for magazines like Constanze, Adam, Vogue, Condé Nast's Traveler, ZEITmagazin, Männer Vogue, Max and the Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin as well as his own magazine Helmut Newton's Illustrated. In 1979, the newly relaunched German Vogue commissioned him to retrace the footsteps of his youth to capture the fashion moment. The resulting portfolio, Berlin, Berlin!, inspired the title of the exhibition which celebrates 20 years of the Helmut Newton Foundation. This collection includes Newton's most iconic Berlin images, as well as many unknown shots from the 1930s to the 2000s: nightcrawlers in uber-cool clubs and restaurants, nude portraits in the boarding houses he knew from his youth, and the Berlin film scene, featuring Hanna Schygulla and Wim Wenders at the Berlin Wall, John Malkovich and David Bowie. In October 2003, only months before his death, Newton moved large parts of his archive to his new foundation, housed in the Museum of Photography beside the Zoologischer Garten station--the very station from which he fled Berlin in the winter of 1938. This publication thus closes a circle in the story of his extraordinary life and work.

Just Loomis' first photographs were made in the mid-1970s, recording the railway lines and the casinos of his birthplace in Reno, Nevada; they tell of the highs and lows of everyday life in the American West. A former assistant and friend of Helmut Newton's, Loomis (born 1957) worked in the 1980s as a fashion photographer for magazines such as Harper's Bazaar and The New York Times Magazine. Turning to portraiture and documentary photography in 1990, Loomis began to make portrait photographs, in both black and white and in color, that show a raw and affectionate view of everyday life in America: a waitress behind a counter in a Hollywood diner, a young couple exuding the bliss of early romance, or children caught in moments of play. From his earliest work through to this latest collection, the photographer's first monograph, Loomis' method has been to insist on the value and beauty of what lies immediately to hand, and to locate the moments that illuminate that fact for the viewer. As June Newton states, "He understands these people, as he comes from the same place. These pictures are without artifice of any kind... I call them a perfect example of Americana today."

Steve Schapiro (born 1934) is the photographer behind countless now-classic portraits of rock stars, film stars and politicians from the 1960s and 70s. He has worked as a film set photographer on more than 200 Hollywood movies; he has designed several iconic film posters, most notably for Midnight Cowboy, Taxi Driver and The Godfather Part III; and as a documentary photographer, he recorded the political tumult of the 1960s and 1970s, in photo essays on narcotics addiction, civil rights protests and presidential campaigns. This volume looks back at Schapiro’s half-century career, reproducing famous images alongside new and unseen work. It includes portraits of the stars as never before seen: Robert De Niro, in full Taxi Driver combat costume, posed in front of his cab with Mohican and an improbably chirpy smile; Jack Nicolson, nose bandaged, tongue out at the camera on the set of Chinatown; Marlon Brando, grinning with theatrical devilishness while being made up for The Godfather. Mario Testino’s Undressed removes various layers. Coinciding with an exhibition conceived exclusively for the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin, this intimate series explores the notion of undressing in photography as much as it lays Testino’s archive bare, probing beyond the photographer’s established public image to reveal a deeper understanding of his practice and oeuvre.
The 50 featured photographs center on the naked body, alternately exploring and pushing the traditions and boundaries between sex, gender identity, and fashion. Honoring the influence of Helmut Newton, the images become abstracted body landscapes, the protagonists appearing as mere form, a torso, even a statue.
A special highlight are previously unseen photographs shot in the Testino studio, in which an exuberant atmosphere intermingles with the implicit frisson of nudity and where playfully amorous dynamics never slip into the obscene or pornographic.
Testino’s lineup ranges from supermodel protagonists, such as Kate Moss and Amber Valletta, to anonymous, androgynous men; from individual portraits to group photos. We see many intimate moments, some caught candidly, some consciously orchestrated, such as a young man shaving a woman’s upper pubic hair in a luxurious bathroom. Following in the tradition of SIR, many of the images may be seen to redefine masculine paradigms in the same way that Newton created his own brand of female beauty.
As emotions, aesthetics, and bodies meet, Testino grants new insight into his world-famous work. The images are accompanied by an introduction from curator Matthias Harder, a candid conversation piece with Carine Roitfeld, as well as an essay from psychiatrist and psychologist Manfred Spitzer who offers a neuroscientific perspective on our visual perception of bodies and beauty.

Deserted spaces capture the interest of the photographer Anna Lehmann-Brauns (b. Berlin, 1968; lives and works in Berlin): deserted by people, these spaces nonetheless teem with images of collective and personal recollection. In pictures that suggest cool dispassion only at first glance, the artist, who studied with Joachim Brohm at the Academy of Visual Arts (HBG) in Leipzig, lends her motifs, which she captures using analogue technology and without artificial lighting, a mysterious and forlorn aura; some situations take on a positively surreal air. Lehmann-Brauns, who has traveled the world with her camera, was in Poland when she chanced upon a factory for funfair equipment and theme park décors on the premises of what used to be a German yarn factory in Silesia. It appeared to be abandoned, but is actually still in operation, though much of the inventory is slowly falling to pieces. Covered by a highly toxic layer of fiberglass dust, "Laurel and Hardy" stand surrounded by dwarves, angels, and beasts—they all form the crumbling backdrop for a peculiar chapter in Eastern Europe’s recent and contemporary history.The book presents selected works of this and of other series.
