It all began in the late summer of 1940, soon after the Germans' spectacularly successful campaign in France, when a heavy antiaircraft battery were stationed on the outskirts of D., a town some fifty miles southwest of Paris.  The immediate result was a series of fatalities, all officially recorded as accidental deaths.  They occurred at a time when the national necessity for war had started to gain widespread acceptance, a time when murder itself was considered quite normal and referred to in current parlance by other, more agreeable names.  Even today, there are many who even now would describe what happened as "only human," if not legally and morally objectionable.  And yet, even at that early stage, there did exist a few individuals who regarded the so-called exigencies of war as a blatant personal challenge.  It soon dawned on them that, under prevailing rules, their only course was to murder the murderers - or at least one of them.  Murder was duly done, and "Case D." resulted.  This book seeks to reconstruct its background.

Tytuł znanej trylogii H.H. Kirsta może być nie zrozumiały dla czytelnika polskiego. Cyfry 08/15 określają wzór lekkiego karabinu maszynowego systemu Maxim, który w armii niemieckiej dwukrotnie unowocześniano - w roku 1908 i 1915.Mimo wprowadzonych zmian konstrukcja pozostała w zasadzie taka sama i w związku z tym określenie "Null-acht-fünfzehn" (zero-osiem-piętnaście) nabrało idiomatycznego znaczenia w potocznym języku niemieckim. Odpowiada ono mniej więcej polskiemu "znowu to samo" albo "według starego schematu".Nadając taki tytuł swej książce Kirst pragnął niewątpliwie podkreślić, że militaryzm i szowinizm hitlerowski III Rzeszy nie były nowymi zjawiskami i stanowiły kontynuację niechlubnych tradycji czasów wilhelmowskich.Gdy w ówczesnym RFN ukazała się ,,Awanturnicza rewolta bombardiera Ascha” - pierwszy tom trylogii H.H. Kirsta „08/15” – wokół powieści tej powstał hałas, jaki nie towarzyszył żadnej niemieckiej książce lat powojennych. Protesty, żądania konfiskaty, procesy, awantury z tradycyjnym wybijaniem szyb w wydawnictwie i księgarniach nie powstrzymały przecież ani mnożących się wciąż nakładów, ani tłumaczeń na obce języki, ani filmowania powieści. Książka stała się najprawdziwszym bestsellerem.
