The funerary practices of antiquity are among the most interesting of man's activities and provide the archaeologist with a fertile field of inquiry. In the interests of clarity the author has divided his book into two parts. In the first he discusses the reasons for, and the nature of, the diverse forms of rituals associated with burial of the dead in different regions of the ancient world, with additional chapters on the journey to the after-life, the later uses to which tombs were put and the steps taken for their protections, and tomb robbing. Cremation and inhumation, human and animal sacrifice, the offering of food and weapons to accompany the dead on their journey to the next world and the vehicles used for this journey- ships and boats, chariots and a variety of other modes of locomotion - are among the many topics which receive the author's attention. In Part Two he describes the funerary monuments themselves, ranging from the great pyramids of the Egyptian Paroahs to the barrows of the British Isles, from the Mycenaean tholos and Etruscan painted tombs to the tayalots and navetas of the Balearic Islands.
Enhanced with over a hundred specially selected photographs and numerous line drawings, and a useful appendix containing information on how to reach the principal archaeological sites referred to.
