<p>Jesse Hawkins, concerned about his estranged brother Travis, travels to New Orleans to patch up their differences. His brother has disappeared and Jesse at first believes Travis, a well-known local artist, is on a walkabout-trips he often takes to break the routine of his daily life and maintain his creative edge. But this becomes doubtful when Jesse learns that Angela Antonelli, Travis' latest girlfriend and muse, is the youngest daughter of a notorious Louisiana crime family. He suspects Travis might be the victim of retaliation for selling nude paintings and photographs of the "baby of the family," especially after conniving his way into the Antonellis' home and taking a beating at the hands of the family's enforcer. After two people Jesse questioned are killed, Johnny Antonelli, who runs the family businesses, claims that Angela has also disappeared. Jesse's skeptical-nudes and sex play a major role in Travis's art and the Antonellis wouldn't tolerate the exploitation of their daughter. They could have her safely hidden away to avoid any blowback from the murder of his brother. After several attempts on his life, Jesse realizes others might be involved in Travis' disappearance. He also discovers the fires that destroyed the Antonelli home and a battered women's shelter are related and somehow connected to his brother. Jesse hooks up with a woman from the shelter who tells him that Angela was part of a therapy group that suffered sexual abuse. A dangerous ploy of Jesse's develops into a deadly fight, and he traps the man who molested Angela since adolescence, and killed both her and Travis in fear that she would reveal the abuse to her family. Jesse's search for his brother and struggle to stay alive is also a journey of self-discovery, as he learns certain unpleasant truths about himself and his own taste for violence.</p>
