Sans cette introduction où j'essaie de montrer ce qu'était le vieux fond religieux de la race, quel moyen de comprendre soit le développement de la religion officielle sous ses deux formes successives, développement qui s'est fait par voie d'abstraction, de schématisation, d'appauvrissement à partir de ce fond primitif, soit la tactique des sectes, qui, aux dépens de cette religion appauvrie, ont voulu renouveler l'esprit religieux et qui ont donné à leur foi conquérante figure nationale ou air populaire en empruntant à ce même vieux fond des éléments désintégrés de croyance ou de culte ? Et ce serait peut-être, dans l'ensemble, le même fond que l'on retrouverait, si l'on interrogeait la masse paysanne, qui est la substance même du pays, pour décrire l'état présent de la vie religieuse. Mon dernier chapitre traite de la religion actuelle. Il ne pouvait être question ici d'énumérer les pratiques et les croyances qu'on peut observer aujourd'hui dans l'ensemble des pays chinois. Puisqu'il fallait choisir et que tout choix est arbitraire, je suis allé à l'extrême. J'ai surtout utilisé des observations personnelles pour tenter de définir l'attitude d'un Chinois moderne à l'égard de ce que nous appelons la religion : j'ai essayé de donner la mesure des sentiments religieux dans la Chine de nos jours. Tout ce que je puis dire de mes observations, c'est qu'elles sont de bonne foi. La meilleure foi du monde conduit-elle à la vérité ? Je ne le soutiendrai pas dans un livre dont la religion est le thème. En le terminant, j'ai indiqué un problème qui intéresse un certain nombre de Chinois et quelques Occidentaux : quel avenir est réservé en Chine à la religion ? Il convenait de poser la question. Devais-je y répondre véritablement ? Inutile de dire qu'un historien des religions ne peut croire posséder le don de prophétie..."
