The General Dynamics F-111 was one of aviation history's most promising planes when it came out in the early 1960s. Despite a rocky service career, political changes in how the military acquired its weaponry, and the addition of too much new technology, the plane provided a credible frontline deterrent in the Cold War era and was used to great effect in the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm. Many of the challenges faced by putting the F-111--with all of its new systems--into service are now accepted as a normal outfit in modern fighter aircraft. Although the Navy did not accept the F-111B model, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat development program was significantly assisted by prior radar and missile system testing on the F-111B airframe. The F-111 was a hugely powerful aircraft and carried devastating weaponry, but was phased out by the USAF in the mid-90s, largely due to crippling maintenance costs. The aircraft remained in Australian service until 2010.

The Lockheed C-141 Starlifter was a new-build design by Lockheed and proved adaptable to many roles, from carrying outsized cargo to dropping paratroops. The C-141 was used in difficult environmental conditions, such as the heat and extreme humidity of Vietnam, the deserts of the Middle East, and the frozen ice pack of Antarctica. Modification programs enabled the C-141 to make full use of its capabilities, by adding in-flight refueling plus extending the length of the fuselage. The plane was a valued and appreciated USAF asset in numerous missions, from disaster aid and humanitarian relief to doing their part in Operation Desert Shield/Storm, and in the war on terror. The aircraft were eventually retired en masse in 2006 simply as a result of wear and tear. John Gurley. In 1966 a Landing Craft Coordinating Group was assembled to discuss and draft specifications for a new landing craft. The work resulted in the Patrol Air Cushion Vehicle (PACV) that saw service in the Vietnam War. By 1970 designs for an Amphibious Assault Landing Craft (AALC) were on the drawing board. The U.S. Navy ordered the first three LCACs February 1982. LCACs move over rocks and other beach obstacles and have reduced susceptibility to damage from mines. The crew consists of five enlisted personnel: a Deck Engineer, a Load Master, a Navigator, an Engineer, and a Craft Master. LCACs are not given names, only pennant numbers to differentiate between them. With an originally specified 30-year life expectancy, LCACs would have begun to retire in 2004 but for a major Service Live Extension Program (SLEP) begun in 2001. First introduced in the mid-1980s, the U.S. Navy's Sikorsky SH-60 Seahawk helicopter fulfills a wide range of functions from combat to providing relief to populations stricken by natural disasters. Based on the U.S. Army's UH-60 Black Hawk, and developed in accordance with the Light Airborne Multi-Purpose System or LAMPS concept of helicopters that extend the search, detection, surveillance, and attack capabilities of ships, the Seahawk family of Navy choppers is distinguished by its hinged tail that facilitates operations from giant aircraft carriers or diminutive destroyers and frigates. The author introduces you to the SH-60F Ocean Hawk with its AQS-13F dunking sonar for detecting submerged vessels, the HH-60H "Rescue Hawk," that can fly 250 nautical miles from base to perform a rescue and then return to base and which also serves in sea-air-land (SEAL) team operations, the MH-60R "Strikehawk" loaded with sophisticated avionics that facilitate undersea warfare and surface warfare operations in shallow littoral regions as well as deep, blue water ocean environments, and finally the MH-60S "Knighthawk" with its two cabin doors that does everything from aeromedical evacuation and search and rescue to mine countermeasures and special operations transport.

In January of 1972, a request for proposals, or RFP, was issued to lay out the guidelines for a new utility helicopter to replace the Bell UH-1 Iroquois type. The "Huey" had served admirably in the Vietnam conflict, but it lacked engine power, was vulnerable to small-arms fire, and was limited in lifting/transporting heavy external payloads. Under the UTTAS (Utility Tactical Transport Aircraft System) competition, the new clean-sheet design intended to rectify all of the UH-1's shortcomings, while integrating the latest technology developments in helicopter construction and power-plant design. This new helicopter would be capable of a cruising speed of 167-201mph/145-174kts (269-324km/h) and be able to maintain this speed for a minimum of 2.3 hours. It had to carry an 11-man infantry squad, with all of their gear, in hot temperature/high altitude scenarios. If troops were not to be carried, that same lifting power provided by two engines would instead lift underslung cargo loads, up to a maximum of 8,000 lbs/3629kg. The cargo cabin space had to be able to be converted with a minimum of effort for use in aeromedical evacuation, utility roles or as an infantry assault transport. After completing an apprenticeship in mechanical engineering, John Gourley joined the Pacific Steam Navigation Company as an engineer and made several voyages to South America. He went on to gain further experience with other shipping lines before returning to dry land where he spent the next 35 years with an engineering inspection company, British Engine Insurance Co.Most of this time was spent as an engineer-surveyor carrying out inspections across hundreds of industrial sites in South Lancashire. The scope of plant ranged from power stations to heritage steam - including steeplejack Fred Dibnah's engines - but the bulk of his time was spent visiting the many factories and mills on his patch.The Other Side of Steam is intended to provide an entertaining insight into an area of engineering which plays an important role but is largely unseen by the general public. Technical jargon has been kept to the minimum for the benefit of those without an engineering background.
