<p>Mr. Goodman has written the firth comprehensive history of woodworking tools in the western hemisphere. Product of a lifetime's study, it should become a standard work of reference. Sections of the book have appeared in Practical Education, the journal of the Institute of Handicraft Teachers. Such has been the demand for back issues containing these articles that they are now completely out of print. The author has visited France, Holland, Switzerland and Germany in pursuit of information, and he spent five months touring Italy, Sicily, Greece and Egypt, financed by a grant from the Leverhulme Trust. Much information has also been obtained from Russian sources. The book includes all the material in the articles revised and with some new illustrations. There are additional chapters on the workbench and some tools not previously covered. The illustrations, which are printed in the text, are an outstanding feature of the book. There are some 200 of them, specially taken by the author or gathered from the museums and collections in the USA and most of the European countries. There is a full bibliography. Each tool is taken separately and its evolution traced from its first known appearance down to the present time.</p>
