Although seven volumes of his poetry are available in Spanish, the work of Ángel González has not been widely translated into English. This bilingual edition, introduced by the poet, presents selections from Palabra sobre palabra (Word upon Word), his definitive collection. Included are poems from Grado elemental (Elementary Grade), which won the Antonio Machado Prize for Poetry. Born in Oviedo, Spain in 1925, Ángel González published his first book in 1956 to immediate acclaim. His poetry is characterized by striking imagery and deeply personal statement that is often sad and sardonic. Of his work González writes, "'Experience,' 'reality', and 'preciseness of expression' are probably...the boundaries that limit the space, on a horizontal plane, in which my poetic intentions move. Upon this plane, trying to add another dimension, I attempt to erect my creative and imaginative possibilities....In some of these poems, written and published in Spain, the result of a determined desire to bear witness will have to be sought not in what the words say but in what they imply, in the spaces of shadow, of silence of anger, or of helplessness that they discover or uncover."Originally published in 1977.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. "Nací en Oviedo en 1925. El escenario y el tiempo que corresponden a mi vida me hicieron testigo -antes que actor- de innumerables acontecimientos violentos: revolución, guerra civil, dictaduras. Sin salir de la infancia, en muy pocos años, me convertí, de súbdito de un rey, en ciudadano de una república y, finalmente, en objeto de una tiranía. Regreso, casi viejo, a los orígenes, súbdito de nuevo de la misma Corona.\nZarandeado así por el destino, que urdió su trama sin contar nunca con mi voluntad, me resigné a estudiar la carrera de Leyes, que no me interesaba en absoluto, pero que tampoco contradecía la costumbre, casi norma de obligado cumplimiento ("todo español es licenciado en Derecho mientras no se demuestre lo contrario"), a la que se sometían en su mayor parte los jóvenes de mi edad y de mi clase social -clase media, transformada en mi caso, como consecuencia de la guerra civil, en muy mediocre.\nLarga y prematuramente adiestrado en el ejercicio de la paciencia y en la cuidadosa restauración de ilusiones sistemáticamente pisoteadas, me acostumbré muy pronto a quejarme en voz baja, a maldecir para mis adentros, y a hablar ambiguamente, poco y siempre de otras cosas; es decir, al uso de la ironía, de la metáfora, de la metonimia y de la reticencia. Si acabé escribiendo poesía fue, antes que por otras razones, para aprovechar las modestas habilidades adquiridas por el mero acto de vivir. Pero yo hubiese preferido ser músico -cantautor de boleros sentimentales- o tal vez pintor. Fui, en cambio, funcionario público. En 1970 vine por vez primera a América -México y EE. UU.-, y empecé a quedarme por ese continente a partir de 1972 (profesor visitante en las universidades de New Mexico, Utah, Maryland y Texas)." ÁNGEL GONZÁLEZ.
