<p>Brain injury can occur as a result of trauma, ischemic and peripheral insult, and represents a leading cause of disability and death across all age groups. Recent reports estimate that 1.5 million Americans sustain head trauma annually. As a result, an estimated 5.3 million are living with a permanent disability. While brain injury mostly affects children and young adults (in civilian and military populations), there is also an increased incidence and prevalence in the elderly, incurring substantial quality of life, healthcare, and economic burdens.
