The photographs of Mark Morrisroe (1959–1989) are steeped in fragility, both as material objects scored and pockmarked by the vicissitudes of time, and as forlorn commemorations of brief moments in all too brief lives. In this sense, the photographs are also objects of ephemera, of a piece with Morrisroe’s equally fragile magazines, collages and drawings, which this volume compiles for the first time. Containing much previously unpublished work, Mark Dirt includes spreads from Morrisroe’s punk zine Dirt (“he sort of invented the Boston punk scene,” Jack Pierson later recalled of his former lover), as well as correspondence and notes by the artist, sketches and even his last will and testament. All of these documents have been assembled by Morrisroe’s longtime partner Ramsey McPhillips, and represent the most complete survey of the artist’s non-photographic works.

The book takes as a point of departure the cultural fascination with violence, atrocity, mutation and the ways that they are depicted (some would say gentrified) as entertainment. The essays examine the ways in which opticality has become so spectacular, how this bedazzlement with entertainment is engineered in the larger sphere of cultural production. For the past 10 years, John Lovett and Alessandro Codagnone have been working collaboratively as Lovett/Codagnone. Their performance work and video installations explore power relations, both as manifested in explicit cultural signifiers like S/M and in clandestine or unconscious practices. Previous photography-based collaborations displaced gay subcultural signifiers into suburban environments or urban public spaces. In more recent works, the audience is confronted with an appropriation of theatrical fallout, scripted communication that makes up patterns of interaction and dysfunction within family structures. The complexity of human dynamics is explored and re-delivered, often through the distilling of a pose that demands intensity and endurance. Lovett/Codagnone's strenuous performances convey uncomfortable and complex relationships in which the only constant is ever-shifting power roles.
