Marshfield, a seaside retreat famous for its beaches, hotels, and ocean views, has always shone in summer. It was the home of some of the country’s leading families, specifically the Winslows and the Websters, and worldrenowned concert singer Adelaide Phillips, as well as the site of the first radio broadcast in America, engineered by Reginald Fessenden at Brant Rock on Christmas Eve 1906. Today the town’s various villages retain the identities that defined them in the early 1900s, from hardworking Green Harbor to beachy Brant Rock to serene Sea View to the rolling Marshfield Hills. Marshfield has celebrated its heroes, survived the great Ocean Bluff fire of 1941, and, most importantly, preserved its history through several historic preservation projects around town.

The natural beauty of Monhegan Island has continuously attracted generations of artists, day-trippers, and summer sojourners. White Head, Pulpit Rock, and Cathedral Woods are names that resonate throughout New England and beyond. Long before the first ferry full of seasonal visitors arrived, the Monhegan Island fishermen had established a permanent community on the island, scratching out an existence on a remote offshore outpost. As early as 1890, prominent artists Robert Henri and George Bellows, followed by Rockwell Kent and Jamie Wyeth, captured the magnificence of Monhegan. They shared the cliffs and coves with the lighthouse keepers, carpenters, lobstermen, and the island people.

When land started to run out in central Massachusetts, the state's National Guard units began to search for sufficient space on which to hold their annual training. They found what they needed on Cape Cod. This land would become Camp Edwards and later the Massachusetts Military Reservation and the Otis Air National Guard Base. When World War II loomed, the reservation became a significant training area for units heading overseas, a proving ground for amphibious operations landing vehicles and equipment, and a major duty station in the lives of thousands of America's military men and women.

Millville had always been known for its glassmaking, but with the outbreak of World War II, the community’s identity was primed to change forever. A private civilian airfield gave way to the creation of America’s first defense airport, the training ground for the U.S. Army’s Curtiss P-40 Warhawk and Republic P-47 Thunderbolt pilots. Bright and brave young men from across the country converged on Millville in the early 1940s to learn to fly and fight for freedom. Some died in training; others flew into history as heroes. While in Millville, they lived the average lives of the country’s military men, playing baseball, flirting with the girls at the local USO dances, and attending Sunday night dinners with local families, creating lifelong friendships in a time when a young man’s life expectancy was in the hands of America’s enemies.

The Coast Guard’s deepest roots run through Massachusetts, the ancestral home to three of the five predecessor agencies that make up the service today. The Coast Guard formed in 1915 and since that time has served the citizens of the Bay State at lifeboat stations, air stations, lighthouses, LORAN stations, and radio stations, as well as on lightships and cutters of all sizes. They have protected the Massachusetts coastline during numerous wars, performing some of the most dramatic rescues in American history―from the Pendleton to the Argo Merchant to the Etrusco and more. The story of the Coast Guard in Massachusetts is one of heroism, honor, respect, and devotion to duty.

The history of the U.S. Coast Guard and its predecessor agencies dates from 1790, with missions in both domestic and international waters. The service has provided aids to navigation, enforcement of maritime laws, environmental protection, search and rescue, immigration and narcotics interdiction, maritime safety assistance, port security, natural disaster response and national defense missions, including overseas with other U.S. armed forces and federal and state public safety agencies. The Service has operated under the Department of the Treasury, the Department of Transportation and, since 2003, the Department of Homeland Security. Its maritime mission regions have included Arctic and Antarctic waters, inland and coastal U.S. waterways and the seas and oceans of the world. This history describes how the Coast Guard has manifested its legacy and motto, Semper Paratus (Always Ready), in changing conditions under each of its leaders.

Since December 31, 2008, I have walked a half an hour a day. While many Americans do this much and more, I've challenged myself to find a new place to do so every twenty-four hours. Again, one might suggest that such a move is not so noteworthy, but there are two catches. First, there's my day job. As a naturalist and public program coordinator for Mass Audubon, my walks this past year have taken me to some amazing places: the former leper colony on Penikese Island off Falmouth, Massachusetts, for instance, to an ever-expanding boulder field in the Poconos, and the puffin breeding colony on disputed Machias Seal Island off the Maine-Canada border. Wearing my Mass Audubon hat - literally - I've walked in Nova Scotia, Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland. Second, there's my side job. Proudly toting my history degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, I've published thirty books on the history of Massachusetts, the New England coast, and the United States Coast Guard. With each step I've taken in 2009, I've looked at the world around me with both my naturalist's eye, spotting, for instance, 296 species of birds, and my historian's eye, finding the past beneath the trees, among the bushes and alongside the trails. The eyes of the United States Navy first focused on Quincy's Squantum peninsula in 1909, when daring young pilots from around the world gathered for the Harvard Air Meet. By the 1930s, the Victory Plant--a destroyer plant that set production records--had come and gone and the navy had set up the nation's first naval reserve aviation training center on the site. When air traffic over Boston Harbor thickened in the 1930s, the navy moved its aerial operations inland to the South Weymouth Naval Air Station.
