The first tank supplied to Britain from the USA under Lease-Lend was the M2A4, but this was only used for training. From this type the M3 was developed although many features of the M2A4 were retained. Designated Stuart 1 by the British Army it was nicknamed 'Honey' by tank crews on both sides of the Atlantic. There followed a slightly improved version, the M3A1 (Stuart II), which was still powered by a Continental radial air-cooled aero-engine. Improvements continued with the M3A2 (Stuart III) and the diesel-engined M3A2 (Stuart IV). The final model, the M3A3 (Stuart V), featured an all-welded hull. The tank saw action in the Soviet Union, Western Desert and in the Pacific theatres of operation. During the invasion of Russia, German armor increasingly had to battle with Russia's superb new T34 medium tanks and the excellent KV1 heavy tank, both of which had better armor and armament than the Panzer III and Panzer IV. The Germans urgently initiated the design of an entirely new medium/heavy tank Project VK3002. A contract to build the Panther was awarded to MAN. It soon gained a reputation as an all-round excellent tank, with over 6,000 being built.

The borders of the Roman Empire were frontiers that were often wild and dangerous. The expansion of the empire after the Punic Wars saw the Roman Republic become the dominant force in the Mediterranean as it first took Carthaginian territories in Gaul, Spain and north Africa and then moved into Greece with purpose, subjugating the area and creating two provinces, Achaea and Macedonia. The growth of the territories under Roman control continued through the rise of Julius Caesar - who conquered the rest of Gaul - and the establishment of the empire: each of the emperors could point to territories annexed and lands won.By AD 117 and the accession of Hadrian, the empire had reached its peak. It held sway from Britain to Morocco, from Spain to the Black Sea. And its wealth was coveted by those outside its borders.
