<p>En mars 1960 paraît aux Editions du Seuil le premier numéro d'une revue trimestrielle, Tel Quel. Pendant plus de deux décennies, elle sera la principale revue de l'avant-garde littéraire et théorique, au long d'une histoire qui reste marquée par une longue série de manifestes radicaux, de débats houleux, de contre-attaques et de changements de caps âprement discutés. Elle sera également jalonnée d'exclusions et de démissions retentissantes.Dès 1963, la revue s'enrichit d'une collection de livres avec trois parutions simultanées : un Philippe Sollers, un Denis Roche et la première Éducation sentimentale de Flaubert.A travers Tel Quel toute l'histoire intellectuelle récente apparaît avec ses lignes de force et ses zones de fracture : nouveau roman, nouvelle critique, nouvelle philosophie; linguistique et psychanalyse; structuralisme et maoïsme. C'est ainsi que, parmi ceux qui figurèrent au comité de rédaction de la revue, on peut citer : Philippe Sollers, Jean-Edern Hallier, Jean-René Huguenin, Jean Ricardou, Jean Thibaudeau, Michel Deguy, Marcelin Pleynet, Denis Roche, Jean-Louis Baudry, Jean Pierre Paye, Jacqueline Risset, Julia Kristeva. Et, parmi ceux qui collaborèrent à Tel Quel : Francis Ponge, Roland Barthes, Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida aussi bien qu'Umberto Eco ou Gérard Genette, Pierre Boulez ou Jean¬Luc Godard, Bernard-Henri Lévy ou Pierre Guyotat.Jamais, depuis le surréalisme, une avant-garde littéraire n'avait à ce point rêvé d'une révolution qui serait à la fois poétique, théorique et politique. Durant ces vingt-deux années d'agitation - Tel Quel disparaît en 1982, avec sa quatre-vingt quatorzième livraison - ce mouvement si controverse n'aura cessé de poser une question toujours d'actualité : celle des pouvoirs subversifs de la pensée et de la littérature.</p>

"Sarinagara" brings together the stories of three Japanese artists across the centuries: Issa, the last great haiku master of the eighteenth century; Natsume Soseki, inventor of the Japanese modern novel at the end of the nineteenth century; and Yamahata Yosuke, who was the first photographer to take pictures of the victims and ruins of Nagasaki in August 1945. These three "dreamed lives" make up the substance of a narrative that takes the reader from Paris to Kyoto and from Tokyo to Kobe, asking the question of how anyone can hope to survive the most heartbreaking experience. The narrator, who has fled to Japan following the death of his child, encounters a series of incidents that allow him to explore the depth of his own grief through the stories of others.
