As the first woman, Eve was the pattern for all her daughters. The importance of readings of Eve for understanding how women were viewed at various times is a critical commonplace, but one which has been only narrowly investigated. This book systematically explores the different ways in which Eve was understood by Christians in antiquity and in the English Middle Ages, and it relates these understandings to female social roles. The result is an Eve more various than she is often depicted by scholars. Beginning with material from the bible, the Church Fathers and Jewish sources, the book goes on to look at a broad selection of medieval writing, including theological works and literary texts in Old and Middle English. In addition to dealing with famous authors such as Augustine, Aquinas, Dante and Chaucer, the writings of authors who are now less well-known, but who were influential in their time, are explored. The book allows readers to trace the continuities and discontinuities in the way Eve was portrayed over a millennium and a half, and as such it is of interest to those interested in women or the bible in the Middle Ages.

Kilcash in Ireland is best known to-day for the Irish song namedafter it. However, behind the song there is a lengthy past which thisbook sets out to unfold. Drawing on archaeological, historical andliterary material, the authors narrate the story of Kilcash from the middle ages to the ruin ofits castle at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The happenings of the area are located in the context of some of the important moments of Irish history in which its people were involved. In the process, once famous - though now oft forgotten - inhabitants of Kilcash are resurrected, alongsidesome of the more marginal figures who left behind some traceof their passing. A newly edited and translated text ofCill Caise based on the extant nineteenth-century manuscript is accompanied by a poetic translation by Eilean Ni Chuilleanain which has been adopted for the Irish Department of Education's Leaving-Certificate examination. The book is well illustrated with photographs, portraits and linedrawings. The appendices contain a full list of gravestoneinscriptions in 'Old' Kilcash. This book brings to life the storied past of Kilcash's castle, church, manor and parish as well as the peoplewho gave it an honoured place in Ireland's history.

What Do Lawyers Do?: An Ethnography of a Corporate Law Firm
