About the Author\nBrian Fleming's first book The Vatican Pimpernel: The Wartime Exploits of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty was published in 2008 by the Collins Press in Ireland and by Skyhorse Publishing in the US. Safe within the Vatican state, he regularly ventured out in disguise to continue his mission, which earned him the nickname “the Pimpernel of the Vatican.” When the Allies entered Rome, he and his collaborators— priests, nuns, and laypeople of numerous nationalities and religious beliefs—had saved the lives of over 6,500 people. 
The first new telling of this extraordinary story in decades, this book also addresses the fascinating dichotomy between O’Flaherty and Herbert Kappler, the Gestapo chief in Rome who ordered him killed, and who, after the war, reconciled with the monsignor, and even asked him to perform his baptism. 
For his heroic efforts, O’Flaherty was awarded the highest honors, including a Congressional Medal, and was the first Irishman named the Notary of the Holy Office. His story was immortalized in the 1983 film The Scarlet and the Black, which starred Gregory Peck as O’Flaherty.

The restrictions applied to Catholics in the early eighteenth century to curtail their political and economic power in Ireland were gradually removed by the British government in response to changing circumstances. Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty was an Irish Oskar Schindler who saved over 6,500 lives during the German occupation of Rome in the Second World War. His escape organisation for Allied POWs, civilians and Jews was dangerous work for someone who was safe only within the Vatican. His network of contacts and helpers included religious, communists, British soldiers and singer Delia Murphy. Thwarting the efforts of Kappler, the Gestapo chief who ordered him captured or killed, O'Flaherty regularly ventured out in disguise. After Kappler was sentenced to life, his only visitor, monthly, was O'Flaherty. O'Flaherty was immortalised in the film The Scarlet and the Black with Gregory Peck as O'Flaherty and was awarded high honours, including a CBE (UK), the Congressional Medal (US), and was the first Irishman named Notary of the Holy Office. He retired to Kerry in 1960 and his death three years later was reported worldwide. He is now commemorated in Ireland by a grove of Italian trees planted in Killarney National Park in 1994 and a statue in Killarney unveiled in 2013 on the fiftieth anniversary of his death.
