Daniel was just a teenager when he was taken to Babylon to be trained for service in the government of the Babylonian Empire. In the opening chapters he writes about the experiences that he and his three friends had as young Jews in a foreign land. Their faithfulness to God caused the proud king Nebuchadnezzar to acknowledge the LORD as “the King of heaven . . . whose works are truth.” [4:37] God gave Daniel the ability to interpret the king’s dreams and predict future events. Daniel was over 80 years old when he interpreted the handwriting on the wall, the night Babylon fell to the Medes and Persians. He was so well respected that he was made a high official in the new government of King Darius the Mede. When the LORD delivered Daniel from the lions, this new king sent a decree to all the nations that dwell on the earth that they must “tremble and fear before the God of Daniel, for he is the living God.” [6:26] From youth to old age, Daniel faithfully obeyed the LORD while serving in two great world empires. The book of Daniel spans 72 years from 606 to 534 BC.

Though Revelation was written primarily to first century Christians, its message is not limited to the first century. For example, the writer of Hebrews exhorted first century Christians to be faithful by reviewing great heroes of faith who lived during the Old Testament times. In a similar way, Revelation gives hope to Christians who are being persecuted by reminding them of God's victories over great kingdoms in the past. These victories also should encourage those that will suffer similar persecutions in the future.

The Minor Prophets were the courageous and true spokesmen for God during the time of the great Assyrian, Babylonian, and Persian empires. Joel’s prophecy appears to be the first of all the books of prophecy, and Malachi the last. They are called Minor Prophets because they are shorter in length than the Major  Prophets. However, their writings are no less important.       We will look at the prophets in their chronological order. Joel, Jonah, Amos, Hosea, and Micah prophesied during the Divided Kingdom. Nahum, Zephaniah, Habakkuk, and Obadiah were prophets in Judah before the Babylonian Exile. Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi prophesied after the return to Jerusalem from the exile. Jonah of Israel and Nahum of Judah prophesied against the city of Nineveh in Assyria. “Before the time of Christ these twelve books were joined together to make one scroll known   collectively as “The Twelve.”

The Minor Prophets: God’s Spokesmen

Isaiah is called "The Messianic Prophet" because of his many descriptive prophecies concerning Christ, our Redeemer, including his virgin birth, his death for our sins, his burial, and his resurrection. Isaiah revealed the gospel of Christ in advance. (1 Corinthians 15:1-4) The Book of Isaiah is the first of the Major Prophets. It is like a miniature Bible with its sixty-six chapters. The first thirty-nine chapters are like the thirty-nine books of the Old Testament with judgments upon sinful men. But the last twenty-seven chapters have a message of hope corresponding to the twenty-seven books of the New Testament. Isaiah's people would be punished for their sins, but repentance would bring forgiveness. The prophet predicted not only the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple but also their restoration. Isaiah had a message of hope for his nation and for the world. The theme of the book is in Isaiah 1:18, "Though your sins are as scarlet, they shall be white as snow."

The purpose of Christ's early ministry was to make an atoning sacrifice of himself for our sins and to establish a spiritual kingdom. God "has blessed us with all spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ." (Ephesians 1:3) The writings of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are called the four gospels, because they report the good news of the life of Christ. After teaching us the way to live, he died for our sins, and he rose from the dead. He now is reigning in heaven and providing forgiveness and eternal life for us.
