A History of Women in America integrates the stories of women in America into the national narrative of American history. By weaving women's lives into the heart of the country's narratives, readers will see women where they were, rather than having them appear as appendages to events controlled largely by men. Coryell and Faires use accessible language, telling stories that will attract beginning scholars to the field of history. Major ethnic groups are incorporated, from Native American and African women who appear earliest in the text, to the major immigrant groups, such as Hispanic, Latina, Chicana, and Asian women, who occupy increasingly larger roles throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

From the colonial era of waterborne transport, through nineteenth-century changes in transportation and communication, to globalization, the history of the Great Lakes Basin has been shaped by the people, goods, and capital crossing and recrossing the U.S.-Canadian border. 
During the past three centuries, the region has been buffeted by efforts to benefit from or defeat economic and political integration and by the politics of imposing, tightening, or relaxing the bisecting international border. Where tariff policy was used in the early national period to open the border for agricultural goods, growing protectionism in both countries transformed the border into a bulwark against foreign competition after the 1860s. In the twentieth century, labor migration followed by multinational corporations fundamentally altered the customary pairing of capital and nation to that of capital versus nation, challenging the concept of international borders as key factors in national development. 
In tracing the economic development of the Great Lakes Basin as borderland and as transnational region, the authors of Permeable Border have provided a regional history that transcends national borders and makes vital connections between two national histories that are too often studied as wholly separate.

Jewish Life in the Industrial Promised Land--1855-2005 combines an examination of the evolution of a small ethnic and religious community with analysis of the dramatic rise and decline of an industrial boomtown. In both popular accounts and scholarly writings, Flint has become an icon of manufacturing production become rustbelt ruin. As this book shows, even during Flint's vaunted postwar "golden age," Jews participated in the good life of consumer abundance but remained outside the city's major industry of automaking and absent from its most important corridors of power. Throughout the twentieth century, most Jewish families in this General Motors town worked as storekeepers, entrepreneurs, and professionals. They carved out a niche in the interstices of a political economy over which, like the autoworkers who were their customers and clients, they had little control but upon which their economic fortunes depended. When General Motors began slashing jobs in the mid 1970s, Flint's Jewish families consequently suffered along with other city residents, both black and white. Flint Jewry thus was forged in a setting of economic boom, but has seen that white- hot prosperity turn to ash, as the city has become America’s poster town for deindustrialization. Jewish Life in the Industrial Promised Land provides a unique window on the religious, social, and communal structures created by Jews in this wildly turbulent environment. It traces a Jewish community comprised of multiple strands of migrants. It sees Flint Jewry as part of a global diaspora during decades of tumult, destruction, and international realignment. The study of Jewish Life in the Industrial Promised Land hopes to stir memories and imagination, to engage and enlighten, and to explicate key aspects of the evolution of twentieth-century American society and culture, while paying close attention to the voices of those whose story it tells.
