"On a sunny Wednesday in August, 1884, four Minneapolis met to sigh the papers incorporating Adath Jeshurun Congregation-the gathering of the righteous. From those humble beginnings arose one of the preeminent Conservative congregations in the United States. Many Minnesotans have known Adath to be 'the oldest Conservative congregation west of the Mississippi,' but until now, few have been familiar with the details of its past. Congregant Etta Fay Orkin has spent the past 30 years painstakingly interviewing congregants, collecting photos, and combing newspapers, church bulletins and early histories of both Adath and the wider Jewish and civic communities, in an effort to preserve the synagogue's story. In celebration of the Adath's 125th anniversary, the results of her research have been wedded to photographs from every era and augmented by Deborah Tolmach Sugarman's narrative of the synagogue's recent past.
