General Erskine was Commander of the Ghanaian Army when he was assigned to the UN as Chief of Staff and Deputy Commander of the new peacekeeping force in Egypt and Sinai (UNEF II) in 1974. Two years later he became Chief of Staff of the UN Truce Supervision Force (UNTSO). Following Israel's first invasion of Lebanon in 1978, the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was set up and General Erskine was its first Commander. In 1981 he resumed his old post at UNTSO, and returned to Ghana in 1986. UNIFIL was hemmed into a small area of South Lebanon amid fiercely conflicting forces. In this book, General Erskine comments on his international service with UNIFIL. The day to day activities and hazards are described, together with his diplomatic activity and the humanitarian work which he considered an integral part of his mission. It also aims to be an examination of the political realities surrounding UN operations in the Arab world and of the possibilities for breaking the impasse. General Erskine also gives an analysis of the new military science of peacekeeping.
