Die stiirmische Entwicklung der Arzneimittelforschung fiihrt beim Einzel- nen, sei er Chemiker, Physiologe, Pharmakologe oder Arzt, zur Konzentration auf sein eigenes Arbeitsgebiet und oft zur VernachHissigung der von ihm selbst nicht bearbeiteten Forschungszweige. Je langer desto mehr ist er gezwungen, die Erweiterung seines Allgemeinwissens und seines Dberblicks iiber den gesam- ten Forschungsbereich in den Hintergrund zu stellen, urn den unmittelbaren Anforderungen seiner eigenen Arbeit gerecht zu werden. So sehr diese Speziali- sierung eine leider unumgangliche Notwendigkeit ist, so sehr ist sie von Nach- teil, stehen doch die meisten Gebiete der Arzneimittelforschung miteinander in enger Beriihrung und bilden so eine Einheit, die nicht in isolierten Bruchstiicken erfasst werden kann. Dem Einzelnen bleibt oft nur die Moglichkeit des Stu- diums von zusammenfassenden Publikationen mit moglichst vollstandigem Literaturnachweis. Die neue Reihe Fortschritte der Arzneimitteljorschung solI die Liicke schlieBen, die zwischen den bekannten Periodica einerseits und den Monographien und Handbiichern andererseits bestanden hat. Damit wird ein Publikationsorgan geschaffen, das in grosseren Dbersichten periodisch iiber wichtige, aktuelle Gebiete der Arzneimittelforschung referiert. Diese Referate werden einem wei- teren Kreis die Moglichkeit geben, sich iiber verschiedene chemische, pharma- kologische und klinische Forschungsrichtungen zu orientieren; dariiber hinaus konnen sie aber auch Anregungen fiir die Inangriffnahme oder Weiterfiihrung von Forschungsreihen vermitteln. Die in Fortsetzung erscheinenden Bande bilden zusammen ein Ganzes, sind ab~r einzeln in sich abgeschlossen. Das wachsende pharmakologisch~chemische Tatsachenmaterial fiihrt zur Vertiefung der Erkenntnis . der' ZusammeIihange* zwischen Struktur und Wir- kung bei einzelnen SUbstanzklassen.

Eleven years have elapsed since the appearance of the first Volume and it is with great pleasure that the Editor is now able to present Volume 14. During these eleven years various fields of drug research have undergone important, partly revolutionary, changes. A number of these have already been dealt with, so that the series PROGRESS IN DRUG RESEARCH contains a comprehensive review of a substantial part of our current knowledge. The Editor is particularly grateful for the opportunity of transmitting to those connected with the development of drugs the extensive knowledge of the Authors, who, without exception, are themselves actively engaged in research. Drug research is currently in a state of transformation: reconsideration in the light of the past and reorientation with a view to the future. To a large extent this is due to the tumultuous developments in the last 20 years, developments which are unparalleled in the history of medicine and the consequences of which cannot yet be completely evaluated. Unfortunately, however, the current situation is not devoid of its unpleasant and even tragic aspects, aspects which fall outside the research worker's sphere or influence. Those connected with drug research, be they in industry, in universities or in clinics, are aware of these problems, and, as a result of this awareness, are all the more in need of an aid which will assist them in ascertaining the current position and in fixing future goals.

<p>In the first years of the existence of this series of monographs, during the so-called "Golden Age" of drug research, the majority of the pa pers published were mainly concerned with the traditional domains of drug research, namely chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology and pre clinical investigations. The series' aim was to give coverage to impor tant areas of research, to introduce new active substances with thera peutic potential and to call attention to unsolved problems. This objective has not changed. The table of contents of the present volume makes evident, however, that the search for new medicines has become increasingly complex, and additional, new disciplines have entered the research arena. The series now includes reviews on bio chemical, biological, immunological, physiological and medicinal aspects of drug research. Researchers actively engaged in the various scientific fields forming the entity of drug research can benefit from the wealth of knowledge and experience of the respective authors, and will be assisted in their endeavour to discover new pharmaceutical agents. Those simply wanting to keep abreast of new developments in the complex, multi-discipline science can turn to the "Progress in Drug Research" volumes as an almost encyclopaedic source of information without having to consult the innumerable original publications. Volume 33 contains 13 reviews, a subject index, an index for the close to 400 articles published in the series so far, and an author and titles index for all 33 volumes.</p>
