<p>Vmesto bolshoy knigi ("Instead of a big book") is a collection of poetry (in Russian) by Leopold Epstein. It consists of 34 poems written after year 2010, none of which was included in any of five previous books by the author. <br><br>The main theme of Epstein’s poetry can be described as a search for meaning and value of one’s life in the constant presence of imminent and complete death. Being a staunch atheist, the author does not look for loopholes and tries to be honest with himself. He believes that the harmony of true poetry makes acceptable a rather tragic worldview that would be hard and uncomfortable to live with otherwise. However, that harmony is difficult to achieve: it requires from a poet both high professionalism and bright, precise vision. Whether or not this is true for this book’s poems, is for the readers to decide.</p>
