<p>Zoroastrianism flourished on the Iranian plateau for 1200 years, from the sixth century BCE to the seventh century CE and the rise of Islam in that region. It survives today among less than 200,000 believers, mostly in India and eastern Iran. The religion is based on the teachings of Zoroaster (Zarathustra), a prophet from northeastern Iran. Very influential ideas about the afterlife — like hell, heaven, individual judgment, resurrection of the dead and last judgment — might originate in Zoroastrianiam, but because of dubiety about the original texts of Zoroastrianism it remains impossible to be certain. Nevertheless, Zoroastrianian in four surviving texts has contributed vivid, rich and provocative descriptions of hell, which are included here from: A Book of Scriptures (Hadhokht Nask), The Book of Ardâ Vîrâf (Arda Viraf Namak), Religious Judgments (Dadestan-i Denig) by Manuschihr, The Book of the Judgments of the Spirit of Wisdom (Mainyo-I-Khard).</p>
