Excerpt from The Shepherds' Calendar This little book of music to the ear and to the mind was published in the year 1579, as the work of a new poet, introduced to the world by his friend E. K. An old colle e com anion, Edmund Kirke. The new poet was dmun Spenser, then twenty-six years, now three hundred and thirty-six years old and ever young. Edmund S ehser was of a Lancashire family, settled at Hurstwoo near Burnley, and in other parts of the same district. A. Lettice Nowell married a Lawrence Spenser, and we find aid to the education of Spenser the poet in a ms. Of the spending of the money of Robert Nowell. The aid shows that he was being educated at Merchant Taylors' School. A John Spenser was described in 1566 as a free journeyman in the art and mystery of cloth-making, at that time in the service of Nicholas Peele, shearman, of Bow Lane. A selection of Spenser's shorter poems which illustrate his unique poetic genius. When Spenser published The Shepherd's Calendar in 1579 it announced the arrival of a rising star in the literary world and the dawn of the Great age of Elizabethan poetry. Although it's dominant theme is pastoral, which had not previously been attenoted in English, it is also political and deals frankly witb the historical currents of spenser's era. Above all, it is a poem of unrequieted love cleverly woven into the passage of the seasons. In Colin Clout's Come Home Again, he writes of his own unhappy Irish odyssey and looks forward to Clout's return to a literary Arcadia. Spenser's loving eulogy to his new wife in Amoretti and Epithalamion is where he confirms his literary authority. The semi erotic Muiopotmos : Or the fate of the butterfly together with the lyrical Prothalamion complete this selection.

The Faerie Queene, Book 5

Book Five of The Faerie Queene is Spenser's Legend of Justice. It tells of the knight Artegall's efforts to rid Faerie Land of tyranny and injustice, aided by his sidekick Talus and the timely intervention of his betrothed, the woman warrior Britomart. As allegory, Book Five figures forth ideal concepts of justice and explores how justice may be applied in a real world complicated by social inequality, female rule, political guile, and excessive violence. At the same time, as historical allegory, it retells a number of the most important events of early modern England, in particular the controversies surrounding the colonization of Ireland. An integral part of the larger poem, Book Five also stands on its own as one of the most challenging meditations on justice in English literature.
