Commentary by E. Raymond Capt The Sonnini Manuscript better known as The Long Lost Chapter of The Acts of the Apostles contains the account of Paul's journey in Spain and Britain. The document purporting to be the concluding portion of the Acts of the Apostles covers a portion of the period after Paul's two years enforced residence in Rome in his own hired house. It is written in the style of the Acts and reads like a continuation. The Bible gives a fairly complete account of the life of St. Paul; his conversion his missionary journeys and his martyrdom in Rome. But there is a period of time approximately six years of which the Bible remains silent. This would be the period after his trial and acquittal in Rome and before his return to Rome to cast his fate with his many converts. These were his Christian brethren who were being put to death by the thousands during the reign of Emperor Nero. It would be reasonable to assume that during this period Paul visited Spain as he had planned (Rom. 15:28) and perhaps re-visited some of the churches in Asia Minor. But Paul had expressed a desire to preach the Gospel to those whom the name of Christ was not known. There can be no question that Paul had heard of the "Tin Islands" because the Romans had already conquered the greater part of Britain. The apostle could have met many in Rome and elsewhere who had been there either as traders or with the Roman army. Bible scholars have long been fascinated by the Breastplate worn by the High Priest of Israel. Set in precious stones it occupied an important place in Israelitish worship for it contained the instruments by which God revealed His Divine will to His chosen people. The gem stones are significant in that each stone is engraved with the name of a tribe of Israel. Again these same names are found written upon the twelve gates of pearl (of the New Jerusalem) described in the Book of Revelation. (Rev. 21:1221) There is little doubt that each tribe of Israel regarded the stone in the Breastplate on which its own name was engraved as its own representative gem. Although much has been written about the Breastplate the identity of the gem stones themselves has received little attention. Since its accidental discovery in 1867 the tomb formed the subject of discussion in many published works. An early writer conceived of the tomb as "the greatest of the many impostures at Jerusalem ." (Life of Sir Charles Wilson by Col. Sir C. M. Watson pgs. 380). Another learned writer Col. Conder asserts dogmatically that the Gordon Tomb is not a "Jewish" tomb at all but was constructed by Christians in connection with the Templar's Hospice - in the twelfth century A.D.In this treatise the author (who has visited the Gordon Garden Tomb several times) has attemped to place before the reader the constructive argument that a prima facie case has been established that Gordon's Garden Tomb is identifiable as the most probable site of the Tomb of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. (John 19:41) The mention of a "garden" usually indicated in those days a working vineyard or orchard."In Jesus" day the entrance to family vaults in private gardens was usually 3 to 4 feet in height just high enough to push the beir in with the soil outside cut away temporarily to give access to it. A rough stone of the required size would then be placed to block the entrance. Thus the tomb would be concealed except for a small window or opening just above the ground level for the purpose of inspection and ventilation. All the Biblical particulars of the tomb and the burial customs of the period are consistent with Gordon's garden Tomb."Excavations around the Garden Tomb during the past 100 years have yielded evidence that the area around the tomb was once a fertile garden containing several cisterns.
