Leading artists devoted themselves to mirroring with unique charm and accuracy the changing tastes and concerns of their age, and their work provides a record of social change within a continuing tradition unparalleled in the art of other countries. Hogarth was the founder of British genre painting and perhaps its most caustic exponent, combining stark realism with high comedy in his comprehensive exposure of the follies and vices of Georgian London. At the same time, his informal portraits of the middle classes foreshadowed the domestic intimacy of the conversation piece, developed in the work of artists such as Devis, Zoffany and Wright of Derby. Meanwhile popular taste -powerful as never before - turned from satire to sentiment, prizing the nostalgic pastoral idylls of Gainsborough and Stubbs. By the dawn of the nineteenth century genre painting was in its heyday, with Wilkie, Mulready and their provincial followers producing narrative scenes from ordinary life to supply an apparently inexhaustible public demand; and in theVictorian age it reached its culmination, with the panoramic scenes of Frith, compassionate evocations of the miseries of the rural and industrial poor by such painters as Walker and Fildes, and the Pre-Raphaelites' psychological dramas of contemporary life. In the closing years of the century the decline of narrative painting was heralded by the arrival of new artistic ideas from the Continent. Several groups of artists sought to adapt these to familiar subject matter, and the supreme example of this fusion of traditional subjects with modern techniques can be found in the work of Sickert.</p>
