The photographs, which include both famous and lesser-known images, are arranged thematically, under the headings 'America in the World War Hot and Cold', 'Mechanization in Command', 'Fame and Infamy', 'Growing Up American', and 'American Ways of Life'. The pictures are accompanied by two major essays that look at the role and development of news photography at the New York Times and the relevance of what pictures were taken and which were published by the paper. A third, shorter essay on "the morgue" is a lively description of the photo archive, telling where and how the photos are stored. Together the photographs and essays shed new light on a decade that is still shadowed by misconceptions and stereotypes. This book accompanies an exhibition that opens at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in January 2002 and travels to nine American cities from New York to Boulder over the next three years.

This publication accompanies the first survey of drawings by Los Angeles artist Ken Price (1935–2013), best known for his abstract, brightly colored ceramic sculptures. Price’s work was only widely exhibited later in his life, but scholars have long admired his highly original forms. As early as 1966, Lucy Lippard commented: “No one else on the East or West Coast is working like Kenneth Price.” Like his better-known sculptures, these drawings feature an idiosyncratic array of amorphous shapes. The book includes an in-depth 44-page illustrated essay by exhibition curator Douglas Dreishpoon, a 20-page section detailing a rarely seen large-scale scroll drawing from 1962, and color plates of all of the nearly 70 works in the exhibition, tracking the evolution of Price’s drawings over 48 years and demonstrating a wide range of characters and techniques.

Leon Golub is best known for his large-scale paintings of violence and the abuse of power, scenes as colossal in brutality as they are in size. But, throughout his long career, Golub was a prolific draftsman as well. With subjects ranging from the classical to the erotic, and media ranging from oil sticks, to conte crayons, to inks, to acrylics, Golub's drawings interrogate the condition of our world. His first major drawing period began when he was a student in the 1940s. He began to articulate the figure in motion as he embraced Graeco-Roman sculpture, and in recent years (2000-2004) his drawings became more informal and spontaneous, with subjects ranging from aggression to erotic fun and games.
