BLACK HISTORY / SLAVERY / HOMESTEADING.  This is a work of historical fiction. It is based on the real character of a true, black slave who escaped from a Southern plantation in the 1850s to establish a dairy in the Pacific Northwest.  Follow his narrow escapes from the South to St. Louis. Then venture west to the Oregon Territory, where Juba homesteaded by a stream, to be known as Negro Creek, carrying the same name today in Whitman County, Washington, near Rock Lake.  All that remains to remind us of his presence is Negro Creek, a meandering stream that flows from a hillside south of Spokane and quietly murmurs: "He was here, he was here." But wherever he went, Juba was judged by the color of his skin.
